I am resigning from teaching - and I can't wait.

Just wanted to share this, have nchanged. I have been a teacher for ten years, now on the SMT for my roles within school.
This year has done me in finally and I am resigning after Christmas and I couldn't be happier. The fact that I have no other job to go to is not really on my mind at the moment!!

It's just got too much for all the reasons given in so many threads and I have read how teachers have left on MN and been so envious, well now I am joining them!
DH is slightly worried about what's next but I have recently specialised in a different area so am going to go down that route. Xmas Grin

But nothing will change if no one says anything. We are all fucked.

IguanaTail · 22/12/2015 16:45

Until the system is set up so you are not reliant on your previous headteacher, it's not easy. No other profession is in this position.

jellyfrizz · 22/12/2015 16:50

If you're leaving teaching then you don't need to rely on your headteacher's reference.

We have all got to start speaking up. If you can't do it when you are leaving then then there really is no hope. There are ways of putting a point across without burning your bridges. It really has led to some positive changes in my school and I am very grateful to those people who spoke up.

If we carry on saying nothing it will just get worse and we'll all have to leave anyway.

Finallyquitting · 22/12/2015 22:28

All really good advice re not venting, and ourblanche YY re disconnecting!
I think I will say why but in a resigned way rather than an aggressive way IYFWIM, stating fa status rather then being emotional. (Hard to do after the term I have had...!)

Bollocks! stating my case not stating fa status.....

Thanks jelly I will pm you.

There is no need to speak up- the fact that teachers are leaving in droves speaks for itself!

jellyfrizz · 23/12/2015 08:19

But if people are telling SLT they are leaving because of 'family reasons' rather than the actual reasons then how can anything change? SLT can't change your family situation, they may however be able to change your working conditions.

People giving actual reasons can help change. For example, some people leaving my school spoke of the huge burden of after school meetings. We now have a staff meeting bi-weekly rather than weekly.

MrsUltra · 23/12/2015 08:24

Report in The Times today ( paper version) about a primary school in Radstock? Somerset where 23 staff have resigned, and police had to be called because of parental disquiet...
Union rep said he had received 23 grievances.
Unsurprisingly the HT has also resigned.
School is 'outstanding' Hmm - presumably no-one though to tell Ofsted they were unhappy working there...

derxa · 23/12/2015 08:33

I did this a couple of years ago. The half term before I left was horrific. I thought they would just understand I was leaving but there was a strange sort of resentment. The last day was horrible. So much so that I didn't go to the end of term night out. I found out they had organised a leaving party. People never forgave me. Try to hold it together for the last little bit, OP.

derxa · 23/12/2015 08:35

I've done supply in some 'outstanding' schools. Horrible horrible horrible.
A really chilling atmosphere.

mumto2andnomore · 23/12/2015 08:41

I left in the Summer and now do supply, I have my life back and though I do miss the children and having my own class it was the right decision. I'm still getting used to the fact that I don't have work constantly hanging over me and that pit of worry in my stomach all of the time. Well done for making the decision to leave and good luck

I agree derxa, one of the good things about supply is that it enables you to see how many schools are run as independent kingdoms with a tyrant at the head who sets the reality for their staff.
From the outside, it's a terrifying view sometimes, and a relief to move on.

MaybeDoctor · 23/12/2015 08:52

I left an SLT post (primary) and never looked back. Although I did get a very odd phone call, out of the blue, from someone conducting a survey on teacher retention on behalf of DfE - was quite blunt in my response!

OurBlanche · 23/12/2015 09:16

In my last 2 weeks we had Ofsted... I made sure my department aired their thoughts properly, as did I. Many other depts did also, probably blaming us for the shite record we had (literacy and numeracy in an FE College). So we had a meeting and set out the message we wanted to give them as a team and I let them know that they could say whatever else they wanted to put across.

I would have told SMT but they neglected to remember I was leaving! I escorted myself from the premises.

Mehitabel6 · 23/12/2015 15:37

It has got so bad that I wouldn't want my children at an Ofsted outstanding school- the stress to stay there is so dreadful that it filters down to the children.
I have known Heads get outstanding for leadership when they make everyone's lives a misery BUT their paper work is superb!

timelytess · 23/12/2015 15:39

Congratulations!
Thank them for the opportunities they provided, tell them how much you value the experience you have gained and how you wish everyone well in the future.
Well done!

FannyGlum · 23/12/2015 15:51

I left in the summer- it is so good! After 12 years on the job. I now work for a union, in an advisory role. I love it, no weekend or evening work, I feel appreciated and not at all stressed!

Finallyquitting · 23/12/2015 16:18

YY outstanding school here too.....

I might write my letter tomorrow, with my iPad open on this page to help me draft it.
I also need to start looking for jobs!

Thanks all Xmas Smile and Wine to you all!

Best of luck OP,

might I ask (as a parent - so sorry to intrude) what it is that has got so awful lately? Perhaps it is none of my business, but I am really concerned to hear about this and to think that perhaps our teachers feel the same about it.

I'm asking genuinely out of curiosity, please ignore me if you would rather, but I've no ulterior motive for asking. It sounds like it must be really awful if this is the general feeling Sad

Pipistrella · 25/12/2015 17:38

Oh have found a few media articles...don't worry...I think I get the picture.

Sorry to hear about it.

chicken2015 · 26/12/2015 22:44

I left my job at end of this term did my nqt year last year and stayed at same school , it was awful where I was and I got anxiety bad and had some time off, I start supply in jan I'm very nervous but happy I'm out of my school. I feel so sad that it is something I've trained so hard for but hated it ( my school was bad) and hope I enjoy supply.

ArmchairTraveller · 26/12/2015 23:10

Supply is a very good way of realising that often it's the school you were in that made a difficult job impossible, and that there may well be a better fit out there for you.

derxa · 26/12/2015 23:19

So many impossible schools with idiots who run them. Sorry cynical tonight,
Look after yourselves out there.
