Teachers - What are your childcare arrangements?

To set the scene - currently doing my NQT in a school which is about 35 minutes away in the car. DH works about 1 hr commute away. My contract is fixed term, which is fine. I'll probably look at a school closer to home for next September. I do enjoy teaching at this school, and will be sad to leave.

Dc's school breakfast club doesn't open until 30 minutes after we leave for work, and no childminders doing drop-offs nearby. We had a nanny who has been unable to cope with the wraparound hours, so are currently on the hunt for another nanny. Because no one wants to do mornings only, we've offered additional hours, both wraparound and some whole days with housekeeping. Basically, trying to accommodate what a nanny might need in order to keep her. We are offering towards the upper end of the going rate for nannies.

It is all getting very expensive! To the point where I am asking myself what on earth am I doing, and wouldn't it be better just to stay home and do the school runs and housekeeping myself? Dh doesn't mind, but apart from maternity leave, I have always been in work or studying, and it's really important to me to maintain financial independence.

I wondered how other teachers managed it? I will definitely be looking to work closer to home after my contract ends, just struggling to see to July at the moment!

I'm a nanny in this situation.
I was full time when the children were small, the youngest started school this year.

I now work, all day Monday, then 7.30-9.30 2.30-5.30. The rest of the week.

I also only work term time.

This works for me, because in my late fifties this is my last nanny job.

I like having the time to see my own Grandchildren and having time for myself.

An older nanny, who didn't want full time would be ideal for you.

We made an offer to hopefully our new nanny tonight - fingers crossed!

How much do nanny's cost?

(Sorry for hijacking OP, on just in a similar situation!)

Artandco · 06/10/2015 07:30

Damsel - £10 per hr give or take depending on location

damselinthisdress · 07/10/2015 06:27

Thank you artanco. I think I'll have to stick with my current arrangement for now.. That's potentially £50/day! Blush

Damsel - a nanny usually becomes a cheaper option if you have more than one child as you pay per family rather than per child. So your £50 example would be the same whether 1 child or 4

Ahh it makes sense. Perphaps that can be a consideration in the long run then. Thanks artandco!

A wonderful childminder who is very flexible and now very much a friend too. Smile

Luckily, DH is now able to get in around 5.30pm, so can pick up if I need him to. Getting in early is hard. I manage around 8am, for an 8.40am start, but would much rather be there about 7am. I think, once DCs are older, I will work in this way.

I was a single parent before I was a teacher. 13 years later, and another DC, I have never taught without having to negotiate childcare. I am not wishing my DCs' childhoods away, but it must be nice to be able to potter off to work and suit yourself over timings.

Well, hopefully we have a nanny sorted. It is expensive, but we can bear the cost this year. I'm glad the children will be able to have friends over after school! She will also do a couple of days housekeeping for us, so hopefully I'll get a bit more sleep now!

I teach at my eldest' school. We use a childminder for meeting days/INSET. Youngest goes to nursery.
