Unpaid time off?

I teach part time in a primary school , but don't have a class. i would like to take my own dc to volunteer in a school in India which would involve missing the first week of next term.( for family reasons, i don't want to leave it til Easter).

due to the nature of my role, i wouldn't need covering as such and the start of term is often not a usual working week for me anyway

how cheeky would it be to ask for unpaid time off, on a scale of 1-10
(10 being very cheeky).

any thoughts?

Sell it to the school as how beneficial it will be for you to see teaching in a different culture. That you can bring back photos and info and do an assembly, etc to the primary kids at your school.

A teacher at dds school did this but had a term off school!

Don't think it's cheeky at all and they can always say no.

I think it would bring a lot to the school if you did this.
Put a plan together of how you will approach the head and go for it!

Good luck

How long do you plan to be in India for? If you are only missing a week of school presumably you will be in India for maximum three weeks including Christmas which will involve a few days off school. How much benefit is that to the school in India?
Disclaimer : I teach in an expensive school in India and have today been involved in two project helping schools. One where we alternate making resources and going to help, the other where our students teach Maths to children involved in a NGO. In both cases the major plus point is these are long term activities and the building of relationships is a main part.
