how many hours do you actually work?

I am exhausted, after only a week and a bit back. I think I must do 70-80 hours a week in term time, and probably about 20-30 in the holidays. Is this normal? I'm so tired but not sure if a change of school or career would solve things?

Lessons 8-5? Less money than state? What's keeping you there?

deriT · 12/09/2015 21:40

I'm not entirely sure. A sense of duty? Fear of leaving without having a new job to go to... feeling like I should see things through? Not much else really. Sad

Grab the bull by the horns and get a new job. You can do it and boy are there enough jobs out there! What subject do you teach?

Philoslothy · 12/09/2015 22:16

YOu have a duty to yourself and your family. Move to the state sector, plenty of jobs.

I quit teaching had a huge breakdown due to the hours/pressure/etc. I couldn't face going back. Am now strapped for cash a tutor and have never been happier. It's not as rewarding as the classroom but I have my sanity life back

DP lost his job, so I'd need a new one first, but state jobs aren't advertised yet and I've missed the notice deadline for my school. I would have to give notice at Xmas for leaving at Easter. I'd probably be better waiting until summer. I just don't know if I can make it that far.

Yeah that school does sound quite extreme, and if it is taking over your life and you are miserable no job is worth that. Can't you give notice now and then leave at Christmas, its 2 terms notice isn't it? That notice period Sounds very long, so if you hand in your notice on Monday you have to wait until Easter to leave?!

Foxyloxy1plus1 · 13/09/2015 09:58

Pretty soon you won't have a choice- it'll make you ill, working those hours relentlessly.

For less money than state- pfft!

So your face to face hours are 50 a week and you're doing another 20-30 in planning each week. That's possibly four hours a day! Madness! I can't see how you can be scrimping on marking and planning if you're spending four hours a day doing it.

I'd be job hunting!

FithColumnist · 13/09/2015 12:25

Ye gods, get out, get out, get out. That is madness.

OMG! Doing 8-5 Monday to Friday is just IMPOSSIBLE and also a Saturday morning???? Does your SMT actually expect you to have a life?

Feel sorry for the students too. Most people don't work those hours so why insist kids do too?

My DH works in an industry that is well paid and works 8:30-4:30 Monday to Friday!
