Anyone taught in a secure unit?

I'm a regular but name changed for this.

I've been offered the opportunity to do some one to one A level teaching with a young offender in a secure unit for a very serious crime. I think it would be great to give this kid some help to get some qualifications that will help them when they get out but I've got absolutely no idea what to expect regarding what it would be like to teach in such an institution.

Does anyone have any experience or helpful advice? Thanks.

I teach high risk young offenders but once they are out and are tagged; many of them highly violent and that have committed varying violent crimes. Also, those that will no doubt end up in an institution if they don't sort themselves out. We have a venue that we teach them at that we rent.

To give you advice would mean writing a whole book as I don't know anything about you or your background/experience.

What is it you want to know?

My background is teaching in mainstream schools (some nice, some tough) and now mainly one on one usually with kids who are struggling to get the grades they want. I've never worked with young offenders before.

I guess I'm worried about the risk of this kid being violent towards me - I've been told I'd have a guard with me at all times. I have no knowledge or experience with kids with this sort of history and I want to do a good job with them.

You can probably tell by the fact they're willing to hire me that I teach a very shortage subject!
