Devices at lunchtime?

I'm aware this isn't AIBU, but... AIBU to ban devices like smartphones from my Y7 tutor room at break and lunchtime, and expect them to go out and play instead? Just that, really.

We already save everything on Google drive and so students who bring tablets etc will have to install that and use it. We're not have it instead of books, paper, folders etc (although a lot of the 6th formers use their iPads for word docs) but to save the faff of booking a computer room for research and such activities. Phones/tablets will be out only when staff say so. The rest of the time, they're away. CA will be device free, unless Internet use is part of it.

I see no point in refusing to embrace mobile technology in schools. I'm sure at one point the thought of ditching blackboards was also thought of as pointless and bound to cause problems.

I suppose I'm put off because of the dog's breakfast it all was last year at our school. It's not anti-tech Ludditism; it's the rush to embrace the latest thing without properly thinking it through.
