How many teachers are you losing this year?

Is it worse this year than other years? Our school has lost someone from all but three departments this year, two (potentially three)from one core subject, one from another, and three from other subjects. One is just jumping ship, one is taking a significant step down, another is going back into research. The list of applicants isn't huge, so we are all very worried. Ours is a school of about 700, so is that proportionate?

We are a secondary 1600 on roll and there are 27 leaving at the end of the year, and several have left during. Another school nearby is losing 33!

My department of 16 will be losing 8! It's all change here!

It's an outstanding school too! I will be going on maternity all being well in November so I'm trying not to get too unsettled.

Should say, I'm one of 5 who are leaving without a job to go to and likely leaving teaching altogether.

My daughter's infant school has more leaving than usual. One to go do supply instead, one leaving teaching completely to "focus on the family", a couple have changed jobs nad one on maternity leave.

Its just going to be the young ones left soon...

I'm relocating and I was officially replaced yesterday when they help interviews for my job! My HoD has resigned with no job to go to, another colleague is going to a different school and the NQT decided she didn't like teaching much!!

We also have the most off sick (long term) I have ever known it. Our cover list is 3/4 pages long every day!

Still 43 days to go!

We have only lost 2 mid year and one at the end of the year. But we are struggling to recruit a decent hod for a core subject. I think this this relects that we have a fair HT and we are mostly trusted to get on with things. Morale does go up and down and some recent restructuring of staff roles didn't go down too well, but in the whole people are reasonably happy. We aren't and Academy if that makes a difference.

so our History department is down to one NQT due to others retiring or getting promotion. English evacuation mainly down to maternity leave and people wanting to leave teaching. There have been 25 resignations this year in total. We have been looking for a good Business/Economics teacher since January and it has been a bloody nightmare as some universities have scrapped their Business PGCE. As for Chemistry teachers, well they are as rare as hens's teeth.

I would like to make a new rule that states if you want to criticise the teaching profession that you have to join us for a year. We are desparate for qualified teachers who know the UK curriculum and understand about targets. One union suggested that schools should share teachers clearly demonstrating that he has lost all comprehension about what a full teaching timetable is.

Next year we are offering some teachers who want to teach more hours more money as we can not find suitable replacements. We are a good school with very few behavioural problems.

All those people who moan about teacher pensions and holidays - bollocks to them! They will have few good people to teach their children, nephews, nieces and grandchildren. It will serve them right for slagging off the profession and making people turn away from it.

Are we desperate? yes we are! sorry this has turned into a rant but I am really worried about staffing.

Mrs-this is more common than you think. We've had at least 3 in my time that got to Christmas and crumbled.
Anyway, our final total is eleven. Hod not replaced, 3 core teachers not replaced-all in same department. The "joke" yesterday was if you've got an o level in it, you'll be teaching it next year.

Yes our hod maths ran round trying to get people to teach maths. I said I would but I have a full timetable ??

I would hate to be doing the time tabling. Preference is being given to Years 11, 13, 12 and 10 in that order. God knows what will happen with key stage 3.

Don't panic now let's wait until 3 September then we can send letters home to years 7,8 and 9 and say that they are on half days until we find the right quality of teacher.

Truly I was almost one of those - retrained as a teacher as a career changer last year, but decided not to do NQT year as had seen horrific situations in my training schools with 2 NQTs being bullied and at their wits end, hobbling till the summer term and resigning without jobs to go to.
Now I am doing supply and loving it - getting lots of gigs to teach lots of maths and physics even though my specialism is MFL, because I have Maths A level Grin. Part of the rationale of doing supply is to see lots of schools so as to have an idea of where I would (and definitely would not!) want to work in if a vacancy came up.
In reality, don't see myself ever applying for an NQT job.

Our time tabler is at wits end, by now she has made a good start, but now most of one of the core subjects have gone and looking like non specialists teaching, she doesn't know what to do.
I'm cover manager, I've got my pgce, but after teaching citizenship, re and h&s care AND doing cover for a year, I've made it very clear I'm doing only what I'm paid for. (And I was shit, so they won't risk that again.)

We will have lost 10fte out of 72 by the end of the year of those 1 was DHT, 2 are HoDs and 2 are heads of key stages all are excellent teachers moving on - we had a new HT last year and impact on morale is showing. 4 will be on mat leave in September. We had 1 applicant after two rounds of advertising for one job - we had outstanding Ofsted last year and it is a selective school and yet it still seems hard to attract candidates. Standard of some pgce students is worrying too.

I've said it before, but I think we're heading for a perfect storm of schools being inadequately staffed and so unable to provide proper support and mentoring to students. Who then become NQTs who haven't had the right sort of support in their training year and so need extra support as NQTs. Except there's inadequate staff to support the NQTs properly. So they struggle through for a year or two but without the support they need they leave the profession. Meaning no ones in the job long enough to take on middle/senior leadership posts and no ones left with the experience to support trainees...

We are losing 5 out of 18 in our department. Several others applied for different jobs but didn't get them. Pressure is intense and people are leving teaching altogether or going part time. I too would hate to be doing the timetabling.

I had offered to take on KS3 English and Maths at our local secondary school. I have taught UKS2 for over a decade now and just needed a little change. I'm actually trained for KS3 English and have successfully taught Maths up to Level 6 without problems (mine don't get much higher,...and I've got Maths A-Level myself, so they think I'm really clever...haha). They didn't want me. Their loss. I'm off to take up the offer to be SLT and lead KS2 at a different primary school instead. Guess it didn't help that the headteacher doesn't particularly like me...apparently her staff don't like her particularly, either. Let's call it a lucky escape. Grin

To be fair, where I currently teach we'd definitely rather have a specialist English OR Maths teacher than a primary colleague who could teach up to L6 in either - we've got year 7s achieving beyond that, never mind top set year 9...

But due to teacher shortages it's becoming a trend to have much less specialism in core subjects at KS3. Our recent Ofsted basically said 'look, we've rumbled you on the shoving your remaining subject specialists at the GCSE classes thing - KS4 is great, but let's face it KS3 is a shambles!'

I teach 7 periods of KS3 & 18 of KS4 this year, which is about the ratio experienced by the other four f/t subject specialists in the Department. KS3, meanwhile, is a bugger's muddle of split classes, non-specialists & medium term supply, & the gap between where year 10 should be at the start of the GCSE course & where they actually are is widening year on year.

Ds's prospect of going into year 7 at a very similar school is one of the main reasons I've finally decided to bail & go abroad.

This is it - in a nutshell!

I am a supply teacher and I go to lots of schools, and go back a lot to a few fantastic schools. (Do not go back to the others)
And.. this really nails it. I see it everywhere.
KS4 has to be the priority.
(Supply: I get a lot of KS classes Grin)
So (assuming you have KS5, tho' I teach a lot in Richmond, which only has Y12 and not yet Y13)
Priority for Eng & Maths is Y11,13,12,10 in that order) because that will affect the DC outcomes, and the school league tables.
KS3 - we will worry about that when they get to KS4. Sad
