Union strikes

This was on the BBC today-part of the Tory proposals bbc

Requiring 40% of those entitled to take part in strike ballots to vote for a strike before industrial action can be held

Interesting that the Conservatives (who were elected on 37% of the vote, think this is fair!

You can't compare a vote for selecting a representative with a vote to approve a course of action.

Yes, they both involve ballots, but there the similarity ends.

I'd like to see a simple change....

If you don't vote you you are counted as "for the employer"

Or

If you don't vote you are counted as "for the union"

Would probably have to be the latter to keep the unions happy.

Either way it is understood which way the non voters are siding.

To be honest though I do think it's a scandal that members can't be arsed to vote.

I do t think it's that crazy. Union members should play a more active role and vote. The trouble is that so many view their membership as a type of insurance/subscription so they can get back up incase of a dispute, and not viewing themselves as members of a union with a role to play.

There was a 66% turn out for the general election. Above the suggested 40% for stike voting.
