Can I please ask for advice - without causing a bun fight?

I will start by saying I am not QTS. I haven't done a PGCE, nor do I have a "proper" degree (I'm a qualified chef).

I work for an agency as a cover supervisor, and have for the last two years. They're fsb, I do two days a week all over Yorkshire, and up until recently it has all been at secondary schools.

Recently I did a course to convert to working in primary school and I'm being sent out as a HLTA, consequently I sometimes get to school and fins that I'm teaching rather than the TA. for secondary I have a huge folder of backup work in all subjects in case there is no work set, and I'm not one who simply sits in the corner ignoring the kids, I actually deliver the work and do my damnedest to teach them. I'm intelligent and educated and if all else fails I'll go for general knowledge stuff, literacy and maths etc.

However with primary I'm a bit stuck to know where I can get the stuff I need as backup, eg yesterday I had Y3 in the morning and reception in the afternoon. Can any of you recommend any websites or anything I can gather to take with me?

PLEASE can we not argue over cover supervisors and how wrong it is that they are there - there's enough animosity towards me in the staff rooms as it is, and I didn't create the job nor the reasons for it - I simply do my best for a low daily rate, and I really do care.

Thanks

Activity village has lots of printable resources on different themes.
For the younger classes you could make your own story sack with soft toys puppets etc themed alongside a picture book.

ATL will take you as non NQT. Good for you for being prepared. No bashing here. I hate all this job demarcation, it reminds me of my days in the theatre.

I'm really surprised that schools do this, it must really piss the class TAs off to be sent someone who is not even a qualified teacher and has no knowledge of teaching the primary curriculum, when they could probably do the job better themselves.
As it is a lot of teachers would rather their TA was in charge in their absence, rather than a lot of supply teachers.

Also teachit. I'm secondary but guess there's a primary bit? Some is free some you need to pay to use. Good luck.

Just an idea but as a chef you might also look for food technology positions as they don't always need a full time person and seem to struggle to keep staff in 'interesting' schools.

I'd suggest you join a union for your protection - especially as you seem to be doing the job of a teacher.

Second as a parent if you are sent into schools in special measures - well its not surprising they are in special measures is it? I'm genuinely horrified!

I'm supply and I've built up a box of things + flashstick of resources to use. Just keep asking teachers for an activity rather than worksheets, primary children really like project work which they can work on with a friend.

I have stories for each year year group - a brilliant comic book for Y6. this leads to project work like- make a creature from the book, make a sequence of scenes of your own version, older children can write a script.

Maths activities: Tangrams, spy codes,Roman numerals- all these can be adapted. Making and describing shapes using art straws.

Discussion group- any subject. Children can plot ideas on large sugar paper and then present it to the rest of teh class. This works for geog, history and kind of topic work.

P.E: look up a few simple games which are inclusive. skipping ropes and hoola hoops are good warm ups.

I'm sure you know this but: whistle, lots of stickers, timer.

As I've gone along I've picked up crossword books, colouring about endangered animals - teach a lesson around it.

I use TES,Nrich and The literacy shed.

Go and look in art and science cupboards there will be resource books in there and you might be able to photocopy a good one.

Please, please look for inclusive and SEN friendly games and activities because supply is especially hard for children with additional needs- you probably know that!

Happy if you want to pm for some more bits.Good luck Smile
