I've been in the profession for 10 years, bar a few years' maternity at home which I didn't hugely enjoy. So I went back into school and have found it too stressful. I can't work out whether it's the school or whether all 'outstanding' secondaries are hideous places to be. I have a few ideas for alternative careers but equally am feeling a wrench at the idea of throwing in the towel. I enjoy being part of a team, like A-Level teaching and working with nice kids and staff. I get very stressed, however with behaviour issues, controlled assessments and the nauseating feeling that I'm never good enough and the other nauseating feeling I have right now that I've still got to look at tomorrow's lesson plans! I have two young DCs so in some ways it's a good career re holidays etc.
I would love to hear any words of wisdom: should I apply for a new teaching post in an 'outstanding' school or should I jack it all in and start a new life with minimal stress?! (I should add, I am not and can't be the main breadwinner so any income just helps).

How many schools have you taught in? If this is the only one, then I would try another school first, but if you've already worked in 2 or 3 schools, and you didn't like any of them, then change career. Every school is very different, even ones with the same Ofsted grade can be very different.

Definitely consider others! I trained later after another career, and the uni I trained with and the schools I was placed in were dire. So considered chucking it and going back to my old job.However... I then went into supply to see lots of schools 'under the bonnet' and found (among many other schools of varying quality...) a wonderful outstanding school where staff really have a good experience, a fantastic SLT that work harder -with the kids - than I have seen in other schools. Would recommend supply. If they treat supply teachers well, they will be a good place to work as a permie.

Thank you both; I may well just apply for this post I have just seen.

I was interviewed and didn't get a job in an outstanding secondary. The HT was very arrogant and forthcoming with the criticism. Also very political and seemed to take issue with all current thinking. The next day I got a job in a good school. Totally different atmosphere and personality.

Thanks byEck, it's not that I'm hankering to worknin an outstanding school, it's just that there's s job advertised in one near where I live. So question is whether I'd be going from one hot frying pan into another
