Supply cover -week to week

Covering a y3 class with another supply (3/4 days). Class Teacher was ill after October half term for 4/5 weeks and since end of January.

The children have not had any of there topic covered apart from briefly one week.

No planning has Ben left and I've not been expected to do it as its hasn't been a long term cover, just week to week.

How would you feel if a whole topic had been missed for a whole term? Obviously, CT is ill and shouldn't plan but I'm kind of Shock really.

So what have they been taught whole you've covered?

Not ideal but if you're ill you're ill.

Part of last terms un finished work. More RE, a bit more spag. No guided reading which is Shock.

The leadership team should be taking control of the situation. When we had a similar situation with a teacher off long term I oversaw all the planning. The supply was expected to do some and we also used planning from the previous year, Hamilton Trust etc.. The supply also set and marked homework.

There should be someone overseeing the planning and making sure it's done. Definitely not on.

Agree, SLT should be over-seeing things. However we have a similar situation at the moment and it's been equally badly managed. Finding 'a body' to cover has been the priority rather than ensuring continuity and security for the children.
Perhaps take it to them as a concern and ask for their help/support in planning a good quality curriculum from this point forward?

HagOtheNorth · 28/03/2015 11:45

What was the arrangement when you accepted the role of rolling supply?
Were you told where the expectations for planning and lessons would come from, have you asked? Have you scrounged from Y2 and Y4 if there isn't another Y3 teacher?
Are you both just making it up as you go?
How would I feel? As a parent, furious. The school has let those children down. As the teacher inheriting the class in September 2015, furious that I'll have so much time to make up and the children have lost so much learning.
As a supply teacher, if nothing had been given to me, I'd have been doing my own planning and linked it from one week to the next as necessary, using the expectations for Y3 and the planning resources from Hamilton, clickteaching, TES etc.

I really don't want yo out myself so I am unfortunately being very vague.

I've used lots of my own previous planning but it doesn't fit in with what the CT said the class will be covering. (dreading a parent asking tbh)

SLT are just glad of the consistency for the class and i think they are in linbo as the dates for CT return being pushed back a few times

As a parent and teacher ID expect you you be planning basic maths and literacy to ensure progress and follow the nc. And guided reading tends to work on a carousel so that wouldn't take long to put in place so that the children are at least reading to someone each week.

Afternoons I wouldn't care too much about as long as the literacy and numeracy were being covered.

Is that what you mean by topic? Surely there's enough on tes or primary resources to at least attempt to cover a topic in a basic way though.

If you are covering the class for more than one week I don't think it's unreasonable that you plan for them surely?

funnyface31 · 28/03/2015 19:09

All literacy are very well covered.

And maths?

Hamilton plans may well be useful here.

I bet there's someone in the school who would share their login if you asked (assuming you don't have one). I would offer to pm you mine but mines for upper key stage 2 and runs out very shortly too.

funnyface31 · 28/03/2015 19:25

Yes Maths too, just forgot to add that. Thanks for the offer MrsM but finished now for the holidays and no plan (unless ct off after easter) to go back as such.

I guess that is the downside of supply, some schools have clear expectations and others non. I always ensure marking done and feedback left for children and ct.

I'm sure you did the best with what you had.

My daughters class has had long term supply for about 6 weeks now but luckily they are two form entry so I imagine the two classes have been doing the same thing.
