Can anyone recommend a Y5/6 musical?

I'm on the hunt for a production for our Y5/6s. There are just over 50 children, so we need one with lots of speaking parts. We've got some capable and talented girls, but fewer boys who would want a main part, so a more female cast would be helpful.
Productions we've done over the last few years include; Shakespeare Rocks, Oliver! The Keymaster, Snow White and the Seven Jockeys, Crikey Moses, Peace Child, Cinderella and Rockafella.
We don't want a leavers/moving on type musical. Any ideas?
Thanks in advance!

We did Joseph at our junior school at that age. It went very well (I still remember the words to Close Every Door to Me and The Coat of Many Colours)

Also in that line is the Captain Noah and his Floating Zoo.

DS1 has just done Pirates of the Currybean, except it was a whole school production (small school, ~230 children across all years) so each class did a different number, while the oldest children (Y6) did the main speaking/acting roles.

Just had a look at musiclinedirect and they have one called Robin and the Sherwood Hoodies - have you looked at that? Or is it too male-oriented for you? You could change it round to be more female, of course Wink

Josef Weinberger do a series called Broadway Jr - costs about £400 but comes with scripts, backing tracks, loads of help with direction and choreography. And legal Wink We've done Guys & Dolls jr, Annie jr and HSM jr.

Schools round here all seem to constantly do Bugsy Malone.

Just re-read the thread and noticed Yee-Ha! mentioned. DS1's school did that too, it's noticeably very similar to Pirates of the Currybean. Even down to extremely similar jokes.

Yes slk. It is still illegal even if you don't charge for tickets. As long as there is an audience of parents you have to pay performing rights & the American company mentioned don't have the rights for Wizard of Oz.

There is a special 20 minute version of Matilda (5 songs & linking script) currently available.

I always thought you couldn't get a performance license for Bugsy either, unless you were performing with a live orchestra?
We've done lots of Out of the Ark ones which are all good. Hoodwinked is a good one. We did Alladin last year.

balletgirlmum · 22/03/2015 14:24

I think with Bugsy you can get away with a keyboard, but yes, the license terms prohibits backing tracks.

We did Bugsy with a piano and percussion. That was in 2006.
