Part timers - How much do you do on days off?

I don't mean planning or marking, that is just part and parcel of the whole teaching malarkey! I mean things like moderation, staff meetings, insets - when they are on your days off.

Yesterday, I paid for childcare so I could attend a staff meeting (was basically told I had to be there) but I wasn't getting paid. I'm expected to go to moderation meetings on my days off, unpaid. HT said that it was just for a couple of hours and that every body had to do work when it wasn't their days.

Inset days I'm expected to be there, for free.

I work 0.4.

Am I being unrealistic about what I should and shouldn't be expected to do, or are they taking the piss a bit?

What do you do?

I had a big issue with this and ended up leaving the school as it couldn't be resolved.
I worked 0.5 - mornings only teaching nursery in a primary school. I was expected to go to staff meetings every week from 4pm to 5.30pm and also if there was an INSET or a relevant training course which was all day I had to go too. I had a one year old DS and I had to pay for extra childcare for these sessions.
I would often be told that I had to go on a training course with little notice. The childcare was a nightmare for me. I got the union involved but it was such a grey area. I was so uncomfortable with it as pre children I had worked long days and never questioned it. But I felt I couldn't continue as I had a young DS and childcare to cover. Some weeks I was almost full time but on part time hours.

Some schools take the piss Boys and the rules are as such that if you work on those days then you have very little grounds for argument. I'm not surprised you left.

I'm v early in pregnancy for DC2 so I will be making it clear so that when I return, everyone know where they stand. I probably should have sorted it out when I took the job tbh.

Guilianna I feel really strongly about attending PTA events at the weekend, especially when they want you to work. As I said, if you volunteer that's one thing, but no one can be forced to, surely? Stand your ground!

Surely this is the point. Clarify at the outset.
I am currently applying for part-time jobs, and the experience of teachers on here and TES is really useful in making a list of questions to ask - thanks!

Interesting subject. I'm currently in a similar situation work 0.6 in a job share. Parents evening this week and we are both expected to attend when it would mean paying out for childcare for the person who doesn't usually work that day.
My day off falls on the late evening parents meetings which run from 340-830. If I did go in it would be unpaid. I would either have to get someone to pick up all 4dc and then feed them & put them to bed or dh who is self employed would lose out on earning so I can go..
Seems like the consensus on here is that you go in on pe even if it's not your day?

I share parents evenings with my job share, we do one each and the head swaps the late and early one so its fairer.

I don't go in on my days off unless I am paid ( except attending the summer Fayre). There are often suggestions that we attend PTA events etc but never any direct pressure as I think the head knows this would be wrong.

I'm happy in my job for the first time in years, but I do constantly wonder when it'll all get unreasonable again lol.

I am doing the mid one 340-530 we are both doing daytime as it's the overlap day 9-12 then she's doing the late 340-830.
We are both happy with this but it didn't go down very well...
We offered to do a late on the overlap day but were told no as it would set a precedent... Can't win!
