Private tutoring ....again.

Can anyone advise as to travel costs? I live in a fairly rural area and have been asked to tutor a child 11 miles away. The journey will take about 20 mins. each way. What would be a sensible amount to suggest for travel costs?
Thanks in advance

20 minutes does not sound long to be honest. I tutor in London and most of my commutes are around 40 minutes (by public transport). I would be very lucky to have a 20 minute commute. Perhaps it's different outside of London?

The AA route planner website gives you an estimated fuel cost for any journey - you just put in the postcodes for the start and finish of the journey.

Thanks for that Lizzie
If nothing else it's shown me how ridiculously expensive my old banger is!!

Private tutoring - they come to me. Works much better that way as a business.

Can back-to-back lessons at peak after school times, control the environment, have all the resources to hand.

Would not go back to travelling.

Given the distance, I would suggest an extra 5 pounds an hour for travel is reasonable. This could be reviewed if at a later date you have 2 pupils living in the same area.
If they don't think this is reasonable then they always have the option of coming to your house for no extra charge!

I travel up to 4 miles, anything above that is charged at 50p/mile (don't forget the return journey), but all my regular tutees either come to me or live within a mile now.

It's not just the petrol, more the time- the journey you describe above is 40mins extra, so in my case I would get £7 for that from the student (some of which goes on petrol) whereas I would earn £16 tutoring for that same time tutoring someone else.
