Should I apply?

I've seen a job advertised at a well-known independent school today. It is for an ordinary classroom teacher, is a 50min drive away (assuming traffic good) and although there is no Saturday school, I'd have to supervise prep til 8.30 one night per week.
I'm currently HoD in an academy where my department has been scaled back to only 1 language instead of 3 when I first started. There's no A level next year, at GCSE hardly any of the pupils would have chosen it (EBacc) and I feel I am working so hard and not being matched by the pupils in terms of effort.
However, having never worked in the independent sector I don't know what to expect. Would you apply in my position?

Yes....

Hmm. . 50 minutes is a really long commute. I haven't taught in an independent school either but I have heard that you are expected to be quite 'available' in terms of time.

That's the thing- I'd feel like I had less time for my own dc I think. I'd need to drop them off at the cm at 7.15 at the latest, not see them at all on the prep day as I'd have to get XH to have them that day. I got up at 6.15 today and thought immediately that I wouldn't want to be getting us all up any earlier than I already do.
Think I've talked myself out of it and hoping something closer comes up.

I would also check that the independent school would allow you to still pay into your teachers pension.

Having, worked in an independent school for several years, I wouldn't. The expectations get bigger continually. That could just be my school though. I'm on mat leave at the moment and hoping not to go back.

That's interesting. It seems there are huge pressures whichever sector you work in Sad
