Exam invigilator job

Hi all,

I have an interview next week and wondered what DOES an exam invigilator at secondary school wear? It has been quite some time (jeez - 33 years) since I was last in an exam situation (when I'm sure it was done by teachers). They are asking for people from all backgrounds with a "sound" (sound???) level of education. Got through the paper sift so I guess an HNC is "sound" enough.

Would the usual interview "uniform" of dark trousers, sensible shoes, a pale "top" and a sensible black cardi be appropriate?

sounds great

good luck

BTW, how is the pay for this? I know a retired police officer who is considering this but isnt sure if the pay is worth it..

Yes, invigilators look smart. Men in suits or shirt and tie, women in smart tops and trousers/skirt. Non-clicky shoes a must. You need a roomful of teenagers to take you seriously.

Teachers don't invigilate any more because it's not a teaching task.

thanks for that... I have "sneaky" shoes, teenagers at home and used to be a dinner lady (have cultivated "the stare" - and have what others have called a "military look" probably tank or battleship )

there are 3 local schools and an adult exam centre recruiting locally - it is that time of year coming up, but since it is only for a month or 2 here and there it is flexible, zero hours contract type work - good for someone retired or a mum wanting an extra reference on returning to the workplace!

the pay seems to be between £7.00 (state schools- weekdays only) and £9.00 (adult exam centres- which require Sat working too) an hour.

thanks, will pass on

Dress code sounds about right. Check the school uniform colours though. It may not be a great idea to wear the same colour scheme as the pupils iyswim.
The most important area is to wear the correct type of shoes - nothing too noisy or squeaky e.g. high heels as this may disturb the pupils as you walk up and down the aisles during the exams.
Usually the number of hours is slightly more than the exam time as you need to set up the exam room beforehand and have to sort out the papers afterwards.

thanks for that - will check the uniform colours too!

Hi - I started as an exam invigilator in November. I usually wear a dress or as you say black trousers and smartish top, with long cardigan or jacket and comfy shoes. The same for interview/training days.

I am enjoying it so far. (Not in it for the money obviously - just over £8 an hour) but it keeps me occupied some of the time (and is less restrictive than a fixed hours part-time job) and means I am home for school holidays. The secondary school I work out sends out a list of dates they have exams and I indicate which I am available for and which I am not and then get sent a schedule of when they need me. If you need the work for genuine income reasons rather than an extra bit of pin money then its probably not for you. Good luck.
