I've been thinking a lot about this lately. Different teachers have different styles but what tips do you have for motivating pupils do to their best work?
I teach primary and often feel downhearted by pupils who make repeated mistakes or show carelessness. And the general chat when they know they should just get on with tasks, grrr!

By making them feel like they are either an expert, making great progress or passionate about the subject.

Or by turning it into a joint venture.

VERY clear expectations. General chit chat and careless mistakes not acceptable. I was once told you have to make it harder for them to get it wrong than to get it right - if there are no consequences for taking the lazy option they will continue to do so.

At the same time, bucket loads of praise, positive feedback and rewards so they want to get things right and do well. And a very positive classroom atmosphere that promotes the idea we are all excited to be in school and learning together - Blue Peter on speed...
