Is it reasonable for my headteacher to ask me to mark books back to September for a colleague who hasn't been doing his marking?

I am being given no time to do this.

The class is one that I teach but these were lessons taught by my colleague on days I don't work.

I have been told that I must make the books look as if they have been marked thoroughly for every single lesson and that I must get the children to respond to the marking.

I have been flagging up for over a year that this colleague does not do his fair share of teaching the course and I have been promised support from the head and head of department to support this colleague.

I've now basically been handed all the work he hasn't done and told to get it up to scratch I case ofsted come. This could be imminent as we are RI.

Half term basically ruined then, for me AngryAngryAngryAngryAngry

Do you have your colleague's address? I would put the books in a bag, take them to his house, explain exactly what SLT has asked you to do and tell him you expect it to be done by Monday. Then email SLT/ head and tell them what you have done and that they can take the matter up with your colleague.

Ok I now have in writing from the head himself that it is not my problem and that smt will work as a team to sort it out. This was after emailing to confirm in writing exactly what I was being asked to do!

I am taking that to mean I'm not expected to do it, or certainly not on my own. I just hope the lazy colleague is not let off the hook though. Will keep the email and stand my ground.

I like the idea of new books and a new start. They have nearly full books so this will work nicely.

Thank you everyone Smile

That is so wrong on so many levels. Not a teacher but I have worked with others who are not team players.

MaraThonbar · 17/02/2015 11:25

Pleased to hear that it's resolved. Now enjoy your half term!

'This was after emailing to confirm in writing exactly what I was being asked to do! '

Top tip for the future. You will often find that unreasonable people will back down if you write to confirm that they did mean what they said, and what they have asked of you.
This works as a teacher, and as the parent of a child with additional needs I have found. Paper trails as ammunition and evidence. Grin
I'm glad it's sorted OP.

Result! Smile

I'm glad you emailed. What you were asked to do was very wrong.
Enjoy your half term.

GettingFiggyWithIt · 18/02/2015 00:06

Flowers Cake Wine Have a great half term.
Biscuit to your ex colleague.

New books is an excellent idea, well done pp, the sooner the better.
Any space left, tell them it will be for them to make their own notes, mindmaps etc nearer exams time.
In the meantime collect the books in, put in boxes for SLT and let them sort them.

You start afresh on Monday with new books. If you have new colleague to share with, decide on how you are doing handovers etc now so you are not screwed over again. separate books

Good luck OP xxx get some rest

*If you know when that will be or what it will cover you could even knock up an A5 title page with tips etc and stick it in after last entry along with instructions for rest of that book...they do own notes etc as a homework.

Agree that children should be issued with new book. You should not have to do this. The only way I would agree to do this would be if
I was given time off timetable to complete the task.
the response to marking was shelved. It is completely ridiculous to expect the children to join in this nonsense.

You should not be doing this in your free time. Your colleague should be doing his own marking. It is ridiculous, arse covering crap to ask you to do it.

Esker · 18/02/2015 14:10

Totally agree with echt in that this would be deception and could expose you to the accusation of dishonesty. Inspectors don't just look at the books, they talk to students and the wheels would soon fall off this charade.

But aside from that I think it is unreasonable, indeed outrageous, to request this of you at all, let alone in your free time.

Good luck resolving this - very cross on your behalf.
