I've had a long break from teaching and have just been offered a post (f/t time) on M1.

Before that I was teaching for 8yrs and got to M6, then moved and it went down to M1. And now this new post is also offering M1.

How can that be? Is it something that I have any control over?

It's the way of it i'm afraid. No LEA or academy is longer obliged to stick to the payscale you were on. I did the same: I was on M6 and then had 6 years out raising two children, went back in at M1. Bit of a shock! But they are in now way obliged to pay you what you are worth anymore. My understanding was that they'll just get an NQT otherwise. Crap, isn't it?

Really?? Shiiit. So how do you get more money in teaching these days? Will it go up in increments still on an annual basis?

Not necessarily - only if you meet your appraisal targets AND your school has enough money. However, if you're performing significantly better than expected, you can ask for more than 1 point on the scale.

Yep, my last appraisal meeting set me targets and I have to pass those to move up the scale at all.

Luckily, they are almsot obtainable. Not like my last school where one target was 100% through the SATS at Level 4!
