Has anyone handed back their TLR

I'm curious whether anyone has given up a TLR responsibility and whether you've resigned yourself to no longer having additional responsibility or you were able to take it on again later?

I've been offered an MA - I think the rationale is that I keep doing everything and with the MA on top. However, I would like to give some proper time to really developing a specialist area. At the minute, I am most definitely a jack of all trades and a master of none. I run around doing random things that get me nowhere but eat my time so I have no opportunity to show initiative or implement anything. I have 2 minor TLRS that are both MAJOR jobs (funny that!).

It does mean I'm signing up for a pay cut, which isn't great, but I do plan to keep one of them on.

I'd appreciate any thoughts.

To clarify - what I mean about take it on again later is you were able to be promoted and previous handing back hasn't held you back!

A friend of mine asked for 'demotion' from HoF to HoD and it was fine.

I gave up a TLR for personal reasons 6 years ago. I was in a position to get it back from about 3 years ago but it's taken until now for the right position to come up which I now have. It's a much longer story though.

Thank you both of you. I'm not going to do the MA now, but I might still hand back part of my responsibility. I want a better work/life balance - I have none now, so anything will be an improvement.

It's good to know that stepping down does not hold you back in the future Doctor.

I stepped down from HoF to HoD (different school) and it has changed my life! It's all about the work/life balance IMO unless you want to be on SLT.

I wanted to be on SLT. I don't anymore. I've been entirely driven for so many years and was offered training before Christmas, finally. I'm in a school with lots of opportunity and I'm well-regarded. I said no. I think I'm finally accepting that it just isn't worth it.

I'm not HOD, but I have two quite significant roles in school. I'm going to see how the next two terms go and make a decision about whether to step back. Deciding not to step up has already been quite a big choice to make for me. It feels very odd to say no!

I didn't think you were allowed to have two TLR's.

I know people who have given up their TLR. One is very bitter about it. Another is much much happier and has a better work/life balance and the third is much happier- she had a baby too.

I think they do it as one TLR and one recruitment and retention payment (with added expectations...).

I think, historically, people could have more than one responsibility and more than one 'point' on their salary. The idea only changed in the last few years and now Heads seem to have ways to get around it. I suppose it depends on how many people are willing to take on extra responsibility when the jobs are there but morale isn't great. I was willing, now I wondering if I need my head testing!!!
