Reception classrooms

So - I have finally been offered a job! So excited, but also extremely nervous because - um - it is a reception class. I have only taught in reception a handful of times (probably not even a handful. I think probably twice. For a morning each time. As a supply teacher.) I normally teach in KS2.

Anyway - I can do this. The only thing, is it is a new class (they used to be a mixed year class, but are splitting into 2 classes in order to keep the class size very small). So I* have a new classroom. Which has in is a variety of things rejected by other classrooms, but no actual learning resources. Like books, or numeracy counters. Or anything like that.

So - as a bare minimum, what do I need in my classroom to make it operable for a small class of reception children? Any ideas?

Lilyloo what's a tough spot on a stand?

lilyloo · 23/11/2014 20:43

They are large plastic octagonal trays. You can have them on the floor with small world in etc.
Then you can place them on stands are just the right height for little ones and make great places for malleable as the rim on them helps to contain the pasta , gloom , beads , playwright etc.

Shelves as dividers for the areas are useful to, good if the children can access things by themselves. Everyday household items are great in the malleable / writing / counting areas etc. Sieves , bowls , ladels , buttons etc

Oh they sound brilliant. We have the trays but not th stands. Can you just get them from a diy shop?

charity shops are your friend too. My friend runs one, and frequently has teachers popping in with wishlists.

my ds's school Reception has a writing table, maths table, dressing up box, roll play area which changes every half term. Small world play (trains, dinosaurs, dolls house), sand play, water play. lots and lots of outside play - digging area with hidden treasure etc.
