How part time is your part time job?

I've recently started taking sets of lit/num at a local school. All is going well except I'm only supposed to be there until 12.15 however I haven't been getting back until 2/3ish everyday and that's only because I'm insisting I have to leave to pick up dcs! It isn't,for my own planning, marking etc but for 'having a chat' with various class teachers etc re the work and other things!
So was I silly to think as a pt teacher, I'd have reasonable hours!

What? You are supposed to finish at 12.15 but feel you have stay hours later? Is this every day? Confused

Imsosorryalan · 25/10/2014 10:39

Pretty much every day, I must admit I'm used to working ft so do feel bad that I leave before the ft teachers everyday, but then again I'm only being paid for pt so why should I stay! What time do you think is reasonable to stay until? I can finish marking, planning for next day etc within an hour I think.

on the day I only work till 12 I twnd to leave the building between 1.30 and 2.

BackforGood · 25/10/2014 10:54

It should be proportional.

When I worked FT, I used to work around 60 hours a week.
So when I went down to 3 days, I used to stop when I'd done 36 hours a week.
If there are 5 hours of teaching time in a day, then think a FT teacher works around 12 hours for every 5 hours teaching. Then look at how many hours teaching you are paid to do, and you can work out how many hours is reasonable to say you've done your hours.

I do lots at home, but walk out of school at the time I'm paid until. 12.30 or 2.30 (or 5.15 on staff meeting day). I have DC to pick up from childcare/ school so have to leave then.

Imsosorryalan · 25/10/2014 11:05

Forgot to add, I do work at home in the evenings/weekends too. I was hoping to leave around 1.30 to be back to do some stuff at home then pick up dcs, but I think it won't work like that really.

If you finish at 12:15 then it should be perfectly possible to leave at 1:30. The teachers are chatting with you because you are there. If you weren't there then the stuff that needs to be said would be communicated more efficiently (e.g. in a planned meeting or by email) and your time wouldn't be wasted with chit chat.
Anyway, shouldn't these teachers be teaching?

Don't feel any guilt about leaving early, you are being paid far less than the ones who are still there. What's the point in going part time, taking a massive pay cut and reducing your pension significantly just to hang around at school talking to teachers instead of spending time on your own stuff or with your kids?

BackforGood · 25/10/2014 13:30

Ah - I see _ I thought you meant 'how many hours should you do'.
Oh, agree with everyone then, you need to be firm with yourself.
tbh, when I went PT, it's the reason I went to 3 days rather than 2.5 - I think that once you are in the building, you think "I'll just......" and then someone asks you about something or you deal with something because you see it happen / are there / etc. and the time goes. If you have to work parts of days then you have to steel yourself to be firm about leaving the building.

phlebasconsidered · 26/10/2014 17:06

I accept that my 2.5 is 3. I go in early on my .5 day and get all my printing etc done, some planning. TBH, it still works out that 9-3 for the other 2 days I tend to be working at home, but at least my weekends are FREE! At the beginning of the half term, I work 2.5 of my days off, by the end, probably 1.5. But I leave as on the dot as I can on the days I work and feel no shame. Part-time is a way to a life back, if you manage it. Of course, the unpaid extra subject leader stuff, INSEt stuff and so on can take eons of time, but that's a whole new thing.
