Wow.
Applied for a job yesterday, got an interview call today, interview is Monday!
Its for a cover supervisor job in a primary school. Back story, was a TA for years, then cover supervisor in a high school, then a behaviour worker in a primary. About to be made redundant so v glad of interview.
So they email me the letter and I have to teach a lesson that I have prepared to a mixed ability class of year 5s. !!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Its a cover position so I assumed they would give me work (as when I did the high school interview) but I have to prepare it!
Ill have a TA and a smartboard if I like but Im inclined to not use the board as its prob different to what Ive used before and I dont want technological stuff to scupper my chances.

But I have gone completely blank in thinking what on earth I could teach?!!
Has anyone got any nice, short foolproof lesson ideas I could "magpie" (as we call nicking work from other children at school!!!) I feel sick and like saying I cant make it!!!!!!

Ask about the group- what levels working at/ sn etc. get name labels for them. Sorry can.t help with content - are you more confident with maths or literacy? Look at the school website for themes.

How long should the lesson be?

littlegreenlight1 · 15/05/2014 18:15

half an hour

Which subject do you feel most comfortable with?

Smartiepants79 · 15/05/2014 21:03

Definitely call school tomorrow and ask about number of children, ability groups, any SEN, EAL etc.
Have they said you can choose anything?
If so choose whatever is your strongest subject.
If you pick a subject then we can perhaps be more helpful with ideas!

What subject? Is Monday a special day in any faith / for any charity etc that you could tap into?

Do you have something unusual at home (thinking artefact but probably more like a really old teddy / toy / kitchen thing etc) that the children could ponder / imagine the use of and design something similar / draw a story board for etc??

Teeny bit worrying that they are asking you to prepare all that for the interview but as long as it is a one off I supoose. As you've been one you're obviously aware of the CS role. Setting work is not part of it. What is the salary? Different local authorities pay quite differently for CS now. Depressing.

You could pick something from The Literacy Shed and get them to write the opening to a story?

I like the abandoned places photos in the Images Shed. You could look at them together and collect some emotion words around being lost in an abandoned place. Then ask them to write the first paragraph of a story where they are lost in an abandoned place of their choice.

Have an opening sentence ready to give to children who struggle to get started (ask TA to target these?).

I am going out of my mind here.
Tiny, you are right, this is not right surely, it must just be a one off. Ive never done a lesson plan in my life and I am really struggling. I know what Im doing but its writing the plan thats awful.
Im doing some kind of lesson on this book Tuesday
It's brilliant and stuff but I don't know whether to get them to write sentences and then improve them with "wow" words or whether to get them to act out some of it or what.
I really would like to get this job but at the moment Im a mess.

There are some outstanding literacy lessons on youtube that you could have a look at for ideas. Good luck for tomorrow, you'll be fine if you just force yourself to be confident.
