Help! Inteview teaching session

I have my first interview in a long time and need to do a 20 min teaching session with 6 year 1 children. The following info is all that I have been given:
to write simple sentences that can be read by themselves and others
to use their knowledge of phonics to spell words
to write simple words that cannot be sounded out eg. "the"
It sounds a lot like Read Write Inc to me but what can I do to make it a stand out /exciting lesson?
I've gone into panic mode and my brain's like jelly!!
The inteview and teaching is on Wednesday!!

It sounds like a lower ability year 1 group. The observers will be looking to see how you interact with the children and how you inspire them to create their sentences. What stimulus could you provide? Picture, object, activity, game? Something you can do or discuss and then put to paper.

You need to get them to write sentences while thinking about the words they use. Speaking their sentence, counting the words so they know what they will be writing (remind about word spacing) and then writing it down. They can then read their own or others and talk about what they like, what they could improve.

Make sure you know your phonics - nothing gets you off my interview list quicker than saying MUH not MMM when encouraging writing Wink

Thanks Brenda. I know it's a RWI school and I've taught that befor. I'm programmed never to pronounce sounds with a schwa and only use pure sounds. Got lots of stuff linked to pirates which I hoped would inspire the boys?
Was thinking of asking them to write sentences to describe pirate / parrot and then progress the more able to include wow words?
Do you think providing the less able with key vocab would be ok or do you think the LO wants them to use phonics to spell for themselves?

With 6 of them I'd probably not have key vocab available (how will you know who needs it before you start?) but I would have a pile of whiteboards so as we sit round a table together I can talk to each one about the words they ask for help with, encourage them to sound it out, discuss which of their phonics they're going to use and then write it for them.

Although before starting I'd probably talk to them about how to spell pirate/parrot or whatever they are writing about and put it up for all of them to see, as all of them will need it.

Are you going to take in some actual objects for them to pass round and describe before you get them to write? For example, they could pass the parrot round and say a complete sentence "The parrot has red and green wings." "The parrot has a yellow beak." That would be a nice way of getting them to articulate full sentences before you get to the writing stage. Would also give you a chance to praise correct sentences and talk about need for FS/CL before they start, especially if you scribe some of their sentences for them.

Is the interview today, if not, perhaps you could have a sensory bag with phonic items in it to help them write a sentence.
Use the parrot as a starter, picture sources of a ship, zoo, cage etc
Then word cards as 'extra' support if needed in a box for them to pull out to make their sentence better, e.g extremely, astonishingly, fearful
Or, have a box of questions for them to answer to help, e.g how bright is the red feathers of the parrot?

Good luck

That isn't really a wide range of abilities for a year one class!

Roll on - was that comment for me? Sorry if I got it wrong, just trying to help.
