I'm a supply teacher who has regular days doing PPA cover in a local primary school in KS1. The class teacher had left prizes to give out to specific children, which I did at the end of the day. When the children were leaving from the classroom, one boy kicked over a chair. I went to talk to him but as I got close, he lashed at me and he hit me. I asked him to apologise but he went to a corner and hid while his dad tried to coax him out.
In the end, I asked dad to collect his other child and spoke very gently to the boy about how I could see he was upset etc. He did eventually apologise. His dad apologised too but made an excuse for his behaviour.
I taught this boy in reception last year and I know him really well. His class teacher has said that she is having problems with him, and I have had to speak to him numerous times about his behaviour (non-compliance, strops, lashing out at others) during PPA time.
I couldn't let it lie though. I spoke with the deputy and told her what happened. They are going to ask the parents to come in. But now I feel quite a lot of angst that I shouldn't have done that. I also feel worried about what colleagues are going to say and the class teacher is going to disapprove (but I don't know why she would). It's a bit of a weird situation because I've been working as a supply for 4 years there, I am like part of the team, but not. At the same time, kicking over chairs and lashing out at adults is not acceptable.
