Hello Larry,

I do hear what you're saying. In my experience, whipping out a jazz hands lesson which is markedly different to the way in which you usually teach, falls flat on its face. The kids are all, "WTF?" and the observer can spot it a mile off because it has a funny 'energy' and the teacher seems uncomfortable. A lesson which attempts to tick too many boxes lacks the inner logic that a good lesson needs, and certainly will seem rushed.

That said, I have observed some truly outstanding lessons which did indeed 'tick all boxes', but that was very much down to the fact that it was obvious that those teachers taught in that way regularly (and clearly spent insane amounts of time on their very impressive data).

I suppose what I'm saying is, don't throw the baby out with the bathwater. "Weird kinesthetic activities" might not be your cup of tea (I'm not really sure what you mean by this, actually!) but that doesn't make them worthless, or not worth trying. I still nick ideas adopt best practice I've seen modeled in observations all the time - it keeps me fresh. If you want your pupils "to do their best when [you] teach them", you owe it to them to be open to trying new activities and ways of delivery, I think, even if you are a bit Hmm about them initially. Not everything which is "trendy" is bullshit. I have definitely been resistant to some initiatives when they were introduced which I now see as invaluable tools (green-pen challenge self assessment and MRI is a good example of this)

Good luck with the rest of your PGCE placement and your NQT year!
