Hi,

I work with SEN pupils in a mainstream primary school and have some pupils who find it difficult to associate the word 'multiply' with the word 'times' i.e. they understand how to times 2 numbers together, but if a word problem/test question asks them to multiply, they can't remember which operation to use.

So, does anyone know of an easy way to help kids to understand and remember that 'multiply' means 'times'?

Btw, I've googled and can't find anything which helps!

We make posters linking the different words and symbols.

We also do things like saying mul-ti-ply, clapping with the syllables, then finishing with and-times, whilst doing the X factor crossed arms. :) multiply-and-times.

Make it linked with movement and leave visuals where they can see them, until they know it (at which point they often 'know' the visuals in their heads).

Also, link both words to the activity whilst you are actually doing it. Eg, working with set of objects, counting them up, using 'multiply' and 'times' etc interchangeably. Link the language to the action - makes it more 'real'

Thanks Bramble, we have a display linking the different names of the operations with each symbol and use both words during maths. I like the x-factor crossed arms idea, so will give that a go.
