Any music specialists about?

I loathe teaching music - I am not musical in the slightest.
However, our Theme until Easter is "Africa" and I've found a really beautiful song (a rough version of the Lord's Prayer in Swahili) and I'd like my class to learn and perhaps perform it.

The language is obviously challenging, but I've managed to get my head around it and I'm sure the kids will too. I just want them to enjoy learning it. Any tips for teaching a tricky song in a tricky language to a willing and enthusiastic bunch??

Try contacting someone in an African UK group, choir or somesuch - I'm sure there must be something.

I had two years in Kenya - but that was fifty years ago! Maybe something from the legacy of Nelson Mandela might exist - I'm sure someone with the appropriate skills would be happy to help out. You'll need plenty of percussion instruments as well.

Oh thanks, Ferguson - that's a fab suggestion. I will contact the Head of Music at the Secondary and see if they fancy joining forces or can recommend me anyone's services.
I do appreciate the advice!

In the past I have written out the words of songs in a foreign language phonetically so they can use their phonic skills and simply sound them out.

Thanks Brigit!
Yes I'd planned to do that. I've taught the Haka a few times in the past and this definitely helped them get to grips with the words.

I would get a cd with examples of African music on to give the children a feel of the rhythms etc. There are lots of African masses etc which you can then for example link with RE to show that Christians live all over the world.

What age group is it for? You could include some of the different elements of music as you go along. Eg learn it quietly/loudly, sing it getting louder, getting quieter, sing it fast/slow, look out for any repeated sections etc.

I could hug you both - thanks so much! It's for year six and I must admit, music is a subject I unfailingly palm off onto the PPA teacher... But I really love this piece and reckon it would be a good challenge for my wonderful class.
Incidentally, this is it:
I think it's beautiful!

Just thought I'd quickly post an update, should anyone be reading. I played the song to the kids today and they LOVED it, they were bopping along which made me smile, and seem to be relishing the challenge of learning the language.
I am no music teacher but I'm excited about doing this!
