Imo the colour of the pen is a smoke screen to poor marking. If the marking is good, you can use what ever colour you want.

Yes! Green pens are rubbish and the kids agree. I flout our marking policy and use red. It has been commented on in book checks but nothing's ever been done about it.

Ooh I love 0.5 Zeb rollers - just so smooth. I will NOT mark in green because it simply doesn't show up well enough against blue/black work. My marking is constructive, formative and regular - the colour has bugger all to do with it.

I use pink ink in a fountain pen. Green is for lazy self marking.

I love a red too, and I hide my best one from my colleagues

It is our school policy to mark in red. We're hard as nails, we are. Green is for editing / peer marking.

At one of my training schools we marked in 'perfect purple' for positive bits and 'going forward green' for incorrect/challenges.

In my first job I used to mark in a different colour every day so that I could give clear feedback on the pupil's responses to previous feedback. My favourites were pink and purple Stabilos.

Then I changed school and I have to mark in blue. The pupils write in black and edit in green. 'Tis very dull

I do liven it up with stamps in different colours though, which are not school policy.

We're not allowed to use red - tis bloody stupid. I occasionally rebel and use dark burgundy, but usually I'm all about the purple.

My DM was once furious at a note from a teacher being in red pen..she insisted writing in red was considered rude..

Everyone knows that green ink is the choice of nutters.

Red ink used to be banned for us. Apparently it might create some sort of phobia - we adults are all emotionally scarred, it would seem, from having our schoolwork scribbled all over in red, so we have to emotionally scar the new generation in blue or black that they can't see as it doesn't stand out against what they've written.
New HT doesn't believe in all that shit, so we're back to red again! And the kids can do their corrections and editing much more easily.

My DP mocks me as I always have a breast pocket with 1 red, 2 blue and a black pen.

To go out with anything less just makes me feel naked.

I mark on-time HW in green and late HW in red.

Marking in class or feedback is student-marked in purple.

Purple is the only way to go, I briefly dabbled in pink doesn't have the same oomph .We can choose whatever colour pen we want , the freedom!

When you mark official exams in Scotland you get a FREE RED PEN! Makes the crappy pay worth it!!

I too am a stationery snob. I have two fountain pens. One with blue ink for normal writing and one with either bright pink or purple for marking. Our SENCO did a student voice exercise with some of our lot recently. They said they don't care what colour we use, but that they don't like it when we write all over their work. Apparently they would prefer us to use post its.

Like that's going to happen.
