Considering doing a masters

Am I mad?

I am considering doing my masters degree whilst working full time, is it possible to do a part time course whilst working full time?

Does anybody have experience they can share of working whilst studying and a young family?

Thanks Smile

I'm primary and halfway through the maths specialist teacher programme which is at Masters level (a third of the credits). It's over two years and very manageable as it is geared towards working teachers. I couldn't do it at a quicker pace though and it takes up a lot of my time during the holidays. I rely quite heavily on my husband taking care of our children while I have study time.

I've just finished mine. It was do-able, but I can't say I enjoyed it.

I did mine whilst working full time, the first year was my PGCE (at masters level), then 2 more years to do more modules and the dissertation. I'm glad I did it but it was a grind at times - especially the dissertation at the end.
If you are considering it, look at a couple of providers and see how the modules are taught - I did mine at Exeter and there were only 4 whole-day sessions and then a couple of 1-2-1 tutorials from the supervisor for the whole final year. I would have preferred more teaching and group tutorial sessions as I find the discussion with other teachers and academics the most useful and stimulating aspect of the process.

I have done my PGDip which was 2/3 of an MA, I couldn't face the dissertation. Also I did my Specialist Primary Maths Teacher training so I couldn't juggle them both.

I enjoyed my modules and learned a lot. I am now starting my SENCo training- perhaps I'm just mad!
