When he becomes King do you think William will put a stop to bowing & curtsying?

The RF seem to curtsy more to each other than members of the public curtsy to them. When William is king, do you think he'll end this tradition?

I hope so! I like most Royal traditions but I think women look ridiculous when they curtsy. A handshake is perfectly sufficient.

bestbefore · 06/05/2026 07:25

I hope so

Sunshineandgrapefruit · 06/05/2026 07:31

No. I think he will have much bigger priorities.

SnappyQuoter · 06/05/2026 07:32

No, I don’t see any of the royals giving up any of the behaviours which set out the hierarchy.

HoldMyWine · 06/05/2026 07:35

Hopefully the curtsying will go, it’s rather demeaning. A handshake is more equal.

mermadeincornwall · 06/05/2026 07:45

It's not compulsory to curtesy or bow ,most people automatically do it as it's a sign of respect

Waitingforthesunnydays · 06/05/2026 07:47

What if you’re wearing trousers? Can you still curtsey in trousers?

Yes, remember H telling us with astonishment that the RF is a hierarchy. Who knew?!

PollyBell · 06/05/2026 07:51

Well I dont presume there is a current law thar says people have to do it, they choose too I presume? or do we have to have another thing people need to be told how to think on?

Screamingabdabz · 06/05/2026 07:52

Are you made to curtesy too much in your everyday life op? Why would this even be a problem for most ordinary people? It’s not the Tudor times. You don’t need William to make a decree. If you ever meet a royal just don’t bow or curtesy. Simple. 🤷🏻‍♀️

FloridaCheese · 06/05/2026 07:54

There's no requirement for the public to bow and courtesy. It's something the do within their circle to each other.

No. Not within the family and in public.

But with members if the public, they barely do it any way and it's a choice...so will remain so, it will naturally phase out.

Such as? The royals are irrelevant in every day life.

RedTagAlan · 06/05/2026 07:59

Even if a law was passed a law to make it illegal to do these things, some people will still do it, because they want to.

Yes, forelock-tiggers continue, astonishingly, to exist.

I think it’s simply showing respect for the monarchy rather than peasantry.

Recklessismymiddlename · 06/05/2026 08:12

You could say it’s bowing/cutseying to the role rather than the royal person. Same as bowing to the judge in court, kissing a priests hand, I’m sure there are others.

Only one I do is bowing to judge as a solicitor. I wouldn’t bow to a royal. I avoid kissing a priests hand as much as possible.

helpfulperson · 06/05/2026 08:16

Not all the royals curtsy. I don't think lady louise windsor does.

Exactly. Saluting in the military is saluting the rank, not the person.
Something Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor is discovering.

Dollymylove · 06/05/2026 08:33

Not too bothered about the bowing and curtseying either way but Andrew M Windsor would be wise to put himself in the council housing list 🤣🤣

Fifthtimelucky · 06/05/2026 08:35

Around forty years ago I was one of a small group of people who were presented to a senior member of the Royal Family. We were briefed in advance and it was made very clear that there was absolutely no obligation for anyone to bow or curtsey. Some of us did, some didn’t.

I imagine as time goes on the number of people who bow and curtsey will reduce and eventually the practice will completely die out.

Whether members of the Royal Family continue to bow and curtsey to each other isn’t of much interest to most people!

Effervescentfrothy · 06/05/2026 08:38

I just wouldn’t do it if I met them. It’s not punishable not to!

TemuRoyal · 06/05/2026 08:42

I thought this too OP. I can see him changing this in one of their family board meetings. It will become one of those antiquated customs that are no longer practiced, similar to herding through members of the public into royal chambers to watch The King eat.

simpsonthecat · 06/05/2026 08:58

The only way it will slowly cease for the public to stop all this nonsense curtseying and bowing is if the royal family stop doing it between them. Kate is forever bobbing up and down when she sees Charles. She then follows it up with a kiss or a hug which seems bizarre.
The royals obviously want it to continue because if they didn't they would stop doing it between themselves when the cameras are on them! The message in my opinion is... this is what we do, so should you!
Apparently AMW used to bow to his Mother and kiss her hand every time he entered a room she was present in.

GoodVibesHere · 06/05/2026 09:02

Maybe it'll go the other way and catch-on amongst the public Grin with husbands bowing to MIL's, friends curtseying to one another, spouses kissing one another's hands as a greeting, business meetings where everyone's bowing and curtseying, can you imagine !
