Hugo Vickers article in the DM about Philip's final hours and cause of death revelation

There's an article in the Daily Mail (paywalled) from Hugo Vickers about the final hours of the late Prince Philip, the then Duke of Edinburgh. Vickers has a book out in April, which is presumably why it's being plugged in the DM. He claims that Philip sneaked away from the nurses who were caring for him shortly before he died, then went for a beer and a bath before he passed away. He also claims that the Queen wasn't with Philip when he died.

Rather astonishingly, he also claims that Philip was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer 8 years before he died. As pancreatic cancer is notorious for being one of the deadliest cancers, I am amazed that Philip survived with it for so long. His cause of death was simply listed as "old age" on his death certificate. This of course assumes that Hugo's claims are actually true. Do you believe any of it?

Dear Lord, what do these private details of someone’s life matter? Make be leave the dead old guy in peace?

I don't see the point in even discussing it, the man was old, he died. No point picking over his bones, it seems a bit vulgar.

I'm amazed that a person dying of pancreatic cancer could get up out of bed in the hours before death. I know there is a thing called "rallying" but having witnessed it in a sibling, it is not a rational phenomenon where one could decide to escape for a beer, get in and out of a bath, or even walk that far.

Anyway, I just want to see his will please.

He claims that Philip sneaked away from the nurses who were caring for him shortly before he died, then went for a beer and a bath before he passed away. He also claims that the Queen wasn't with Philip when he died.

And this is important because?? Does it matter if a dying man had a beer and a bath? And if the Queen wasn't with him, she either was or wasn't - that doesnt matter either.

His source?

wow can't he even have privacy in his final hours.

I know of a friends father who lived for way more than 8 years with pancreatic cancer so that bit could be true, even if unusual. No idea what he was like in his final stages.

My 82 year old MIL is 6 years post pancreatic cancer.
MIL was diagnosed at the start of COVID, her operation was cancelled as there were no ICU beds and she had to wait 7 months for it, having weekly chemo instead. They’ve since found out that not having the operation to remove the pancreas so quickly and having chemo first, had lead to more people living longer.

Not sure if its appropriate to discuss or not, or what may or may not be true. But I do like the idea of Anyone who is so close to death managing to get up have a beer and a bath (if that is something they enjoy) before passing. It's a nice idea.

I'd leave out the beer and bath but eat some chocolate while watching the BBC's 1995 version of Pride and Prejudice with my DH and Children sat on the sofa next to me.

Cancer can be incredibly slow growing in very old people. Everything slows right down, including the growth of cancers. This can explain why often very elderly people die “with” cancer rather than “of” it.

I find Hugo Vickers’s style of commentary utterly repulsive; he’s so simpering and obsequious, but I’m a Republican so I don’t find his subject matter particularly appealing anyway.

It’s amusing however, how these odious royal commentators tread a very fine line between fawning over the RF on tv while selling juicy tit bits about them in their books!
