The royal family

Why was Prince Philip allowed to keep saying offensive things?

SewANeedlePullingThread · 06/01/2026 10:30

There are so many examples of Philip saying offensive things such as:

"If you stay here much longer you'll all be slitty-eyed." This was said to a group of students during a royal visit to China.

"If a cricketer, for instance, suddenly decided to go into a school and batter a lot of people to death with a cricket bat, which he could do very easily, I mean, are you going to ban cricket bats?" This was said in response to calls to ban guns after the Dunblane incident.

"It looks as if it was put in by an Indian." This was Philip talking about a fuse box in a factory.

There are so many more examples. Why was he allowed to act this way whilst representing the Royal Family? I like a laugh, I can take a joke, but he was so often just really offensive.

At work, certainly in large workplaces and institutions, if they heard of you saying these things, you would face some sort of investigation/action.

I was just reading that he said ‘I would get arrested if I unzipped that dress’ to a 25 year old woman who worked for a council, on a Jubilee visit. In 2012!

He was carrying out a job/role.

Edited

Again, you're mistaken. It wasn't a job, it was his life. Who do you think could investigate him? What action do you imagine there could have been?

It's a silly comparison. Obviously if you said those things in work.you could get in trouble. But that never applied to him

simpsonthecat · 07/01/2026 18:10

Surely his wife could've said... Phillip, just tone it down a bit will you?

Maybe she tried and he was actually toned down in public!

I suspect there were some sighs of relief from the palace press office when he decided to stop doing the public engagements.

That’s assuming she thought it needed toning down….

I think it’s evident that the late Queen couldn’t control her family. Like most people - if she had the leverage; she didn’t use it.

I think his behaviour betrays the values of the family. They are the literal pinnacle of colonialism & capitalism.

I’m not saying a republic wouldn’t have problems - but this family must become congruent with the law and transparent about all of its finances.

No sensible argument can be made against these two expectations surely? Unless we are grovelling peasants grateful for the crumbs of ribbon cutting and head patting that they do?

Let them pay REAL taxes, death duties and open a full register of interests. Stop hiding the historical record like Andrew’s trade envoy records sealed for decades -why are they allowed to do it? Because they are full of hidden power while pretending to not have it.

wildfellhall · 07/01/2026 18:40

Full of concealed power and wealth generation that they hide behind a cloak of good works.

Said it like it was?

Racist.

I think you missed the point of that post. Tbf, I had to read it twice.

CurlewKate · 07/01/2026 13:22

People in positions of power being overtly racist IS an important matter. People thinking it was and is OK IS depressing.

It's much more important to be concerned at eg Trump's attitudes and comments than it is someone who died years ago, who has no bearing on a potential WWIII

Surprisingly enough I’m capable of being concerned about more than one thing at once….

Probably did. And he didn't. So....?

Me too. But of all the things I care about or could possibly care about, the ancient comments of an old dead prince wouldn't make the top ten thousand.

So what?

That doesn't show him up in a good light does it?
To me, that means he didn't listen to anyone, if she asked that

This whole thread is about how "someone" should have done "something" about the things he said.

But nobody can say who should have done what, other than his missus should have had a word. He famously didn't listen to her.
So.......?

Some people said he was wrong when he was alive. The same arguments were used as we’ve seen on here already, he was from another time, he was old, but he did lots of good etc. Now he’s dead, it’s ’why Are you talking about this, he’s dead’. So it was minimised when he was alive and people want it ignored now he’s dead. How convenient.

The RF serve us apparently. There should be some sort of accountability for them when they act immorally and say inappropriate things. Throwing your hands in the air and saying ‘but what can we do’ is a cop out and it’s dangerous to have people in such privileged positions with no accountability.

That’s disgusting. Dirty, perverted man. And 2012 so not very long ago at all. Dirty, dirty creep.

Because his wife was the Queen. He did and said what the fuck he liked.

I’m glad it was started! Well done OP.

Most people are capable of caring about lots of issues and MN isn’t about to run out of space so they can all be discussed. People can go and find a thread about something they find worthwhile if this one doesn't meet their criteria. 🤷🏻‍♀️

Yes but where does it end looking back on and analysing historical characters? (and being offended by them)

I mean Charles the 1st believed he was gods representative on earth and was very racist... If you weren't god, or a similar prince of the church (the pope) you were beneath him and not worthy... He was racist, sexist, all of it. Henry Viii was a bit iffy in the way he treated women too. It didn't end well for 2 of them...

I'm offended by Charles and want him cancelled. Both parts of him (after having his head chopped off)!!! And Henry, we need to stop teaching about him in schools. And we need to stop playing the Tudors on TV. It's too sexy and I'm offended that, well, something... The women are too hot in a time before toothpaste. So there:)

Leave the Duke of Edinburgh alone. Be offended by other things that affect our lives far more today please.

I've said previously, there were times when the Palace made public apologies for him. So he was being held accountable in that way

I read a half hearted apology from BP after his comment about the fuse box. The article said it was the first public apology. He had made a lot of awful comments previous to that and continued to make a lot after so it doesn’t appear that he listened or felt any true remorse. That’s not real accountability. It sounds more like they knew he had gone to far with that one but the way he continued to be an offensive arse, says to me that he probably didn’t want an apology put out publicly.

The man was a cunt.

No, I won’t the racist, pervy, creepy and inappropriate man alone. We can talk about this and never let it be forgotten, whilst talking about other things that affect us too.
