Why do British people who want to abolish the monarchy act like this?

boltj · 17/11/2025 04:00

I know that there are a lot of people in Britain who want to abolish the monarchy for various reasons whether it be due to them thinking that the monarchy is scandalous, a waste of money, a symbol of inequality, anachronistic etc. however, why do I rarely hear British people who want to abolish the monarchy claim that abolishing the monarchy will prove that Britain is independent in the same way that Australians who want to abolish the monarchy often do?

Australia and Britain both share King Charles and some Australian republicans say he is a foreign head of state, “not one of us” and that by abolishing the monarchy, Australia will prove to the world it is distinct and independent so why don’t British republicans employ similar rhetoric instead of just harping on about inequality or cost?

Do you mean why don’t British republicans argue that abolishing the monarchy would make us independent from Britain?

StartupRepair · 17/11/2025 04:41

There are two issues.

In Australia the monarch is a) unelected and b) a citizen of another country.
In UK the monarch is unelected. (And rather unaccountable).

DarkForces · 17/11/2025 04:54

Independent from what? The argument doesn't make sense in a British context

Isn't that enough?

jeffgoldblum · 17/11/2025 13:46

I’m not a republican but I have to say, your question makes zero sense at all !
are you from the U.K. ?
you are aware that he’s the monarch of the U.K. and “ British “ refers to only one area of the U.K. ?
and lastly why would “British “🙄 republicans want to be independent? , from who? From where?
republicans in the U.K. have their own opinions and they don’t need to explain themselves to anyone else!

Fairgamer · 20/11/2025 18:13

It's because having Australia as an independent country is the main subject of Australians, mostly. So republicans from Australia talk about it. British people who are republican don't care that much if Australia or Canada are independent or at least it's not their main concern, but instead more of a side effect that will help their goals or result in their goals .

It's for Australian people to decide it, after all.

CurlewKate · 20/11/2025 18:17

I’m a Republican, @boltj. I will answer any questions you have, provided I understand them.

ginasevern · 20/11/2025 18:21

Because Charles is a foreign King to Australia and he is not a foreign King to the UK. I'll give you a clue - he is not Australian.

‘British’ does refer to the whole UK. If you refer to someone as English, Welsh, Scottish or Northern Irish then you are referring to that specific nation of the UK. But British is the blanket term for all of us.

I thought that was quite obvious!?

You've obviously missed the good Friday agreement then...

No, British does not refer to everyone in the UK. People from NI are either Irish, British or both depending on their preference and identity.

I am under the impression that the United Kingdom is the united kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland and that Great Britain is made up of the big bit which has Wales, Scotland and England all stuck together.

And you are under the correct impression. People often use 'Britain' and 'UK' interchangeably, but they are not the same thing at all. I'm Welsh but never call myself British as there are also people out there who seem to think that British = English. I'm looking at you almost everyone I met in California in 2018!

Arlanymor · 20/11/2025 19:17

Oh and in answer to the question... I would answer if it made any sense.

EponymousEponine · 20/11/2025 19:19

Probably because Britain isnt a colony of itself? 🤔

I went up to a counter in an eating place in the USA. When I asked for whatever it was, the man behind the counter said, "Are you a Brit?" He'd heard the accent.
I said,"Yes, I'm English." He smiled because I'd qualified my Britness!

cityanalyst678 · 20/11/2025 20:05

Why do non Brits care what we think? I don’t give two monkeys what your opinion is on our Royal Family, especially as you don’t even tell us where you are from.

Indeed! I ended up downloading a map of GB on my phone to explain why although I come from Britain, I come from the wibbly bit on the west of the mainland!

That’s true, but it gets messy because Ireland (all of it) is in the British Isles.

I don’t think anyone sensible would call the Republic of Ireland “British”. But someone calling NI “part of Britain” isn’t exactly wrong either.

Ah, ok I understand. Sorry - from the way it was expressed it just looked wrong. Didn’t think of the NI nuance - many apologies.
