Andrew no longer Duke of York, palace confirms - after 'creative' move by King
Buckingham Palace has confirmed Andrew has been removed from the official roll of the peerage, effectively meaning he has lost his Duke of York title.
It comes after we told you earlier (see 9.17 post) that Andrew's name no longer appears on the official roll.
Dukes are listed on the roll of the peerage maintained at the Crown Office and, as Lord Chancellor, David Lammy is responsible for maintaining the peerage roll.
We understand that the King issued royal warrants for the dukedom of York to no longer be recognised in the list of peerages, which has the effect of removing Andrew's title.
King has acted 'very creatively' - what it all means
"The Lord Chancellor's office has taken responsibility for maintaining the peerage roll and, very creatively, the King has decided to remove the Dukedom of York," our royal commentator Alastair Bruce explained.
"It does avoid the need to go through a legislative process with primary legislation through the Lords and Commons to get rid of it.
"Now this is done, Andrew is no longer the Duke of York.
"You can't use it in any way; it's gone."

From Sky News ⬆️

You can’t use the Duke of York name in anyway.

You think I’m being idiotic. But I’m not.

Was Humpty Dumpty not a cannon, during the Civil War?

quite frankly, we should have stopped with the monarchy then

On a more serious note.... the Duke of York School. I wonder if they are having discussions (again its a completely different Duke!)

Strangely, it is easy to believe that OP is a person who sings Humpty Dumpty on a regular basis

🤣

Except then we had Puritan England. Which wasn't much fun, really.

The thing to do with that, plus the pub signs, is to have a really huge image of the other Duke of York.

Possibly - I was reading orgin of Humpty Dumpty and it was apparently an alcholic drink and also word for a clumsy person - so it may have been a joke with misdirection.

I think rhymes get re-purposed and then catch on again plus people make up back stories for them then others go and disprove them.

Nowhere in Humpty Dumpty does it mention he's an egg.

To misquote Ricky Gervais "That'd be the first thing I'd mention. Once, right, there was this egg that could climb walls" 🤣🤣

Because of this thread I have “The Grand Old Duke Of York” as an ear worm- thanks for that!

Oh the Grand Old Duke of York
He had twelve million quid
He gave it to someone he never even met
For something he never did.

Excellent

Schoolchoicesucks · 31/10/2025 17:37

Getting Humpty Dumpty muddled with the Grand Old Duke of York is the funniest thing I've heard this week. Bless you, OP, I love that you came up with this connection to a nursery rhyme, started a thread on MN and got it wrong. Does anyone sing nursery rhymes any more?

Dollymylove · 31/10/2025 17:55

What about pubs called the Duke of York?
Can we still drink in them?

Only if you don't sweat.
