Why are we still doing this?

Article on the BBC today about the annual price going up while everything else is being cut. What is the purpose of a "royal family" in 2025? Surely it's time to let them just be rich people who pay taxes like everyone else and stop funding this circus. It's especially irksome seeing so many in uniform covered in pretend medals when they charge the army millions in rent

Royal family on the Buckingham Palace balcony

Public funding for royals triples since 2012 because of Palace works

Royal aides say the rise is because of a Buckingham Palace building project and the funding will come down again.

The King has no such thing as “absolute prerogative” in terms of changing anything. Powers are held by the government and the constitutional monarch sticks to the rules. We haven’t had any real debate about this for generations. Nor should we.

Of course the RF could be retired. It would be a legal quagmire and almost certainly not worth doing. Who on earth would be our President? We couldn’t agree! We are better off not rocking that particular boat. It’s better for the RF to change and hopefully they will. Has Kate ever worn a uniform? Maybe that’s a start?

And people are voting them in not out again your focus is on the wrong thing we are not the only country with a royal family we are the only country bitching about them not costing us a lot of money while the government's (plural because they are all shit) rob the poor freeze elderly help out there mates bleed the country dry and generally make a fortune of the misery of the people

What exactly do you imagine the costs to be?

Page 3 Second Post. I detailed some costs off the top of my head.

My focus is on several things.

One - we have unelected heads of state who own vast tracts of land and are billionaires.

Two - This is not democratic. I want to be able to vote for the head of state.

Three - We have had years of Austerity, public services are ground to the bone. We have ever increasing bills, millions are using foodbanks and 1/3 children are in poverty, yet we are paying for people to live in palaces.

Also let's not lose focus that none of the vast wealth they have was earned. It's all been gained by stealing off other countries or from their 'subjects' with the great invention of feudalism and now taxes. The world's best and worst pyramid system

Your all focusing on the wrong thing like it really makes a difference in the grand scheme of things you really think that we will get rid of the royal family and suddenly happily we have more money for pensions and disability payments?

Fucking deluded

It's not really about the financial costs - it's about seeking true democracy.

Are you suggesting the UK is not a democracy? Most of the charts of strongest democracies have the Scandi and Dutch monarchies at the top - also NZ, Canada and Australia. Now let me think what is similar about all these world class democracies.........

Look up The Economist democracy index, I assume you think The Economist to be a trusted source.
