This will be another reason why she has been nominated. She was number one in the top searched people and number 6 most searched news stories.

Cancer, not pre cancer, actual cancer. I think there are others more suited to Person of the Year but diminishing her illness is completely unnecessary.

I was not diminishing her illness at all.
I have no issue with her illness, I understood she was having preventative chemotherapy so it is not conclusive either way.
Look at Chris Hoy for example. He was pretty much blackmailed into telling the world he had cancer, and then decided to tell the full story of what he is dealing with. He will have helped many younger men understand that prostate cancer can be a killer under 50, so to go get checked.
With KM's huge following, if people knew what she had then maybe she could have helped somebody. But she didn't chose to do that and that's absolutely fine.
I am not sure nominating her for Time person of the year is merited, that's all.

Summernightsinthe21stcentury · 10/12/2024 12:32

I can also understand why the others have been nominated for this, just not Kate.

Preventative chemo means cancer. They just couldn't be 100% sure they got it all in the surgery. The precancerous cells thing seems to be a recent attempt to minimise the seriousness of her illness, possibly as a result of a Sky News reporter misspeaking, possibly something more sinister. But all the official stuff has been very clear she had cancer.

MrsLeonFarrell · 10/12/2024 13:24

Time are basically using Catherine for clicks. They knew it would be controversial, they knew it would stir up online comment for and against. It's just more publicity for their magazine as far as they are concerned.

They learnt nothing from what happened to her in the press earlier this year, they don't care about individuals only revenue.

@Gorgonemilezola "People are bumping their gums over the nominations for entirely the wrong reasons."

I'm not.

PrettyFlyforaMaiTai · 10/12/2024 14:17

I recommend this Tatler article for those who are struggling to understand why she was nominated.

“The rumours and conspiracy theories regarding her health and whereabouts evolved into think-pieces on the royals relationship to the public, and what privacy means for those in positions of power.

It’s this maelstrom of debate surrounding the Princes of Wales’ health journey that caught TIME’s attention”

Many on this thread are though. Lots of people who don't 'get' what the nominations are about. It's not some kind of reward for heroism or bravery like receiving a vc or excellence in the sciences like a Nobel prize. It's not even an award per se, just something that catches a mood, reflects society.

Yes - it’s not a recognition of a quality of the person named - it doesn’t mean necessarily someone to look up to (although some have been very worthy in that regard), it’s a zeitgeist person - someone who has significantly entered the public consciousness in this particular year.

CoffeeCantata · 10/12/2024 15:32

Sunblessed · 09/12/2024 19:53

I’m guessing it’s for showing dignity and stoicism throughout her illness while the internet/media were on fire with horrific conspiracy theories

I don't think it's a value-judgment about the person's worth - but a reflection of their high profile in the past year's news stories.

I think Catherine does a good job and I wish her well - but I think this is merely about her recent news-worthiness.

HeadNorth · 10/12/2024 15:39

Gorgonemilezola · 10/12/2024 10:18

But as has been pointed out several times already, Times magazine person of the year has nothing to do with achievement, bravery etc etc. It's more about the zeitgeist, hence the inclusion of people like Trump, Musk and Netanyahu on the list. People are bumping their gums over the nominations for entirely the wrong reasons.

But Trump, Musk & Netenyahu have been active agents in the past year, for good or ill, driving developments with global significance. Kate has been a recipient of cancer treatment & was fortunate enough not to have to do any work during it. She has literally done nothing.

HermioneWeasley · 10/12/2024 07:22

The winner should be Gisele Pelicot. Anything else is a travesty

This times a million. But since the voting/final decision is almost certainly going to be made by a man I think we can be pretty certain it won't happen. And they'll vote creepy Musk instead 🙄.

RedRosesPinkLilies · 10/12/2024 16:54

I can’t believe Kate is getting grief for something she didn’t ask for - unless you can nominate yourself for the award?

It sums up why she’s on the shortlist in the first place

Gorgonemilezola · 10/12/2024 17:03

'She has literally done nothing.'

But created vast amounts column inches, conspiracy theories, hatred etc etc. Again, the 'award' is not about what people have done for the good of the world. Those saying Gisele Pelicot should have 'won', haven't got the message. Ms Pelicot is undoubtedly a worthy recipient of any award for bravery, but that's not what this is about.

JADS · 10/12/2024 18:31

Weren't Harry and Meghan in this list at some point? They were on the cover of Time for being influential.

I don't think Catherine will win (and I don't think she cares), but it makes sense why she is included. It's also a sad indictment that we live in a world where people couldn't just leave an ill woman alone. Kim K seems to have weathered the storm, but Blake Lively's reputation has been damaged.

JADS · 10/12/2024 18:34

Gisele Pelicot is a very brave and courageous woman. I think her idea of 'winning' would be to see her scummy husband and his mates locked up and the key thrown away. I hope she gets some closure and protection going forward.

BemusedAmerican · 11/12/2024 15:36

I grew up reading Time. The magazine is a sad shadow of itself. Previous winners were not always human:

No one takes this seriously anymore.

Was that the photo of her wearing a white jumpsuit with Harry standing behind her?

That was when they were named among 100 most influential people 😁 and Harry looked like her hairdresser....

MrsLeonFarrell · 12/12/2024 14:30

Stand down everyone, Trump won.

JSMill · 12/12/2024 16:28

@Gorgonemilezola yes I remember H looked like he was explaining he'd taken a bit off at the ends but kept the layers nice and long!

this title is no mean good person s ince 1927, TIME has named a person, group, or concept that had the biggest impact—for good or for ill—

And it looks like they usually do the winning candidate in a presidential election year too. So shouldn't have been a surprise really.

Carouselfish · 09/12/2024 19:35

Well, she was ill. And in the news a lot. Are those the criteria?

No I don't think she should get the award. I've nothing against her but a lot of folk are going through life threatening illnesses under very difficult circumstance and without the support she has.
