…really like this? Back in March the New Statesman had this to say:

“Our parasitic behaviour is the only reason she’s made this announcement.”

I'm sick to death of her still being called Kate Middleton. That's not her name.

PrincessMee · 17/07/2024 20:15

I actually don't mind it as I am used to women continuing to use their maiden names even after marriage. It is a cultural thing in certain countries.

Serenster · 17/07/2024 22:12

I don’t mind it either.

There’s been a fair few Princesses of Wales and Queen Catherine’s. So I’m fairly sure it’s how she’ll be known in history - no different to Elizabeth Woodville, Anne Boleyn, Katherine Parr, Wallis Simpson, Sarah Ferguson etc - women who have married into the royal family and had surnames are generally still generally referred to by those names.

Women who married in with titles are generally known by that too - Charlotte of Mecklenburg-Strelitz, Anne of Denmark, Princess Mary of Teck, etc.

”they should have” was a familiar excuse and an end run around blaming the victim that was frequently parroted here during the height of the hysteria.

"they should have" is frequently parroted about others all the time

Why whats the difference, why is it okay to say it about others and not okay for some others? Why the special treatment?

Big difference between saying someone should iron their clothes or not talk about other people’s private parts.

I'd say pandering to American mob rule. I don't think the British public were the ones baying for their pound of Catherine's flesh.

I think I agree with this.
I'm afraid I expect the UK tabloids to publish truly awful things from time to time, and social media is a cesspool, nothing could shock me there.
But I really was shocked by the cartoon the Washington Post published, of William with a puppet Catherine at the window.
I don't know what was supposed to make it funny. I think we were supposed to be rolling on the floor in fits of laughter at how hard it is for people with a high public profile to navigate family breakdown? I guess that was the implication. Maybe they knew about her cancer diagnosis, in which case it's oh so hilarious that it's a struggle for people with public facing roles to navigate treatment for serious illnesses.
I don't know what convinced them to publish it, but they must have detected a taste for that sort of humour among their (mostly U.S.) audience. That paper has dropped in my estimation.

Gosh, I had no idea about that, @LilyBartsHatShop (great name, btw). I always associate the Washington Post with Woodward and Bernstein and pioneering journalism. A bit sad that they stooped so low for into gossip pedalling. Colbert was the one that astonished me. He went far beyond humour into viciousness, and did a defiantly unapologetic “apology”.

I cancelled my subscription to the Washington Post over their truly mendacious reporting of the Wii Spa incident.

I stop reading the WP over something similar. Very blatant lies over days to spin a story that has a huge impact on the culture wars here. Also involving a child.

Ah, that did for the Guardian with many of us this side of the pond. Unbelievable gaslighting of women in general and the bullying of one woman of colour brave enough to speak.

BemusedAmerican · 18/07/2024 16:16

Jeff Besos bought the Washington Post in 2013.

So Trumps shooter had an interest in a ‘Member of the Royal Family”, I kind of assumed it must have been Harry being based in the US, but it wasn’t him, it was Princess Catherine, he had searched her and downloaded photos of her. 😲

The comments on X are quite pointed about the lack of ‘interest’ in the expat Royal and see it as an example his security fears may be a bit over exaggerated 😏.

Gorgonemilezola · 19/07/2024 15:53

Oh glory - Trump will be even more insufferable now 'I took a bullet that was meant for Queen Kate'.

I always thought Neil Basu was a bit of a chump when he commented on threats made against Meghan. I'm sure all the rf receive thousands of threats every year but because Basu commented on threats against Meghan he made it sound as if no-one else was ever on the receiving end of any threats.

Has that been confirmed by an official source? I thought the “Harry a target according to FBI “sources” “ might be a bit of bullshit planted for the tabloids to bolster his security claim. Catherine seems to be an odd target for this particular young man, unless his republican registration was purely to help keep Trump from getting the nomination.

All the royals undoubtedly do. And there isn’t a prominent woman in the public eye who doesn’t receive a plethora of rape and death threats. Somehow MM’s supporters have made the impression that she is a unique target.

Actually just saw a news item that the FBI told Congress that a RF member was on his list. I just can’t see anything saying it was Catherine.

Just read a piece in the Telegraph that says he had a photo of the Princess of Wales on his phone, along with other possible targets such as Joe Biden, the American Attorney General and the director of the FBI. It seems he was not particularly politically motivated despite his republican registration. He had donated to the Democrats as well
