What would your recommendation be for the young Wales' future?

Watching George, Charlotte and Louis earlier, I'm wondering what decisions William and Kate will make about their education and future directions. How does one navigate the transition from close siblings to very different adulthoods, in order to avoid the issues seen with Harry and Andrew?

I'm wondering if it's better to steer them in an close, supportive Royal role like Anne, Edward and Margaret or more private, separate lives such as enjoyed by Peter Phillips and Sarah Chatto.

Whole thing could and should have been wound down with dignity after QE2 IMO.

I think (and hope) Willy may be our last 'king' so forsee naturally a top of the range education for the kids, a manufactured career with a freedom to jaunt at will clause much like the York gels then a town and/or country pile each. Usual maintenance woes not an issue thanks to the massive IHT and other tax breaks enjoyed by ancestors.

To get out now. With an angry social media and a clicks chasing traditional media, I think that it’s a pretty safe bet things are only going to get worse. And I believe that’s true for nearly anyone who sticks their head above the parapet. Unless you can grow a hide like a rhino.

It would be great to see at least one have a successful career in the public sector, true “service” but I can’t see it happening. Has any royal managed this? I can only think of Katherine, the Duchess of Kent. (I always wondered where she lived whilst a teacher in Hull).

But would the media leave them alone to get on with it? I remember Lady Louise got a summer job in a local garden centre and the press went and revealed the location. She's only a minor royal so what chance have the Wales children got?The press is the real hindrance here.

SpringerFall · 18/06/2024 11:38

We only know a very tiny bit of their lives, what I really want is people to let them be and stop the armchair experts who pretend to know what is best for them

Pemba · 18/06/2024 11:49

For them to be able to have a more normal childhood and teenage life without being paraded in public like performing seals (as at the Trooping the Colour ceremony a few days ago, they all looked bored senseless). Poor bloody kids, they didn't ask for this. It's almost abusive.

We all know what the answer is! I would like to think that we don't have a monarchy in 30 years or so. We should grow up like most countries have.

OutwiththeOutCrowd · 18/06/2024 12:15

I would like it not to be taken as given that George will take over the family business. He may not wish to do that. All the children should be educated as if they might not end up doing 'royalling' at all. They can decide their paths when they are older. If none of them want to be involved, there might be others from the wider family who would relish being 'working royals'.

If none of them are up for it, we shouldn't carry on with the setup just because it's a historical habit - a transition to a different way of looking after the infrastructure that has grown up around the royals could be instigated.

I'd quite like Charlotte to do something 'substantial', as in a challenging job in the real world, but it's up to her of course.

BemusedAmerican · 18/06/2024 12:20

Unarmed combat training for all three. There are a lot of crazies out there.

The press didn't bubble it until 18/19th August - just after she'd finished there ahead of starting at university. She wasn't driven out by press intrusion.

It's usually held as an example of press restraint - which is the norm for the press leaving royal DC alone until after they finish university.

And indeed the (British) press will leave royals alone in other circumstances - it was an Aussie organisation whose reporting led to Prince Harry having to be withdrawn from Afghanistan.

PrincessMee · 18/06/2024 18:02

All the posters suggesting substantial careers for Charlotte or meaningful ones. Can you give examples?

Pemba · 18/06/2024 22:25

Diplomat? Something to do with charity?

Pemba · 18/06/2024 22:54

That's probably what people meant but what about rock star, footballer, scientist, surgeon, astronaut wouldn't it be great if they could follow their dreams?

Sad really, they'll have lives of cutting ribbons and/or mainly ceremonial roles in the military

All the Royals are involved in charity.

Pemba · 19/06/2024 00:11

Yes but the CEO of a charity? Not just a patron.

SlothOnARope · 19/06/2024 06:52

Fingers crossed for a republic before they do their A levels.

Their best bet is probably a lot of work experience with their Uncle James, so they can properly learn the family business of financial subterfuge and corporate raiding.

This.

CurlewKate · 20/06/2024 14:13

I think they should start by not letting them appear at things like the Trooping of the Colour until they are at least 16. Obviously they can go to family weddings and the sort of events any child would go to, but not the millions of eyes on them type royal events. And they shouldn't send them to boarding school.

That’s a job that requires actually knowledge and experience not just being given it cos your dad’s the king. Can’t see that working out well 😬

For sure...

There is no reason why they cant be expected from now to study and learn these things. Also, why are people just talking about Charlotte? She is second in Line after George. Louis is way down the pecking order. I think if they are told from a young age (and I agree, not shoving them on a balcony until they are over 16, or fathers day/ Christmas cards etc) that they will be expected to make their own way in careers they choose - maybe a restricted group due to security, like working for a charity or diplomat if they were clever enough. Then they will, if they want to, gain the knowledge and experience necessary. They will have everything handed to them in a way most other kids trying to get experience in the Diplomatic service will not be able to get. I think the chances of that happening is slim though. They will need to be dragged kicking and screaming away from it all, no matter how much they say they hate it. They don't hate the status and the unearned wealth, they just hate the stuff they have to do to justify it.

PrincessMee · 20/06/2024 17:45

@DramaLlamaBangBang you are talking as if you have had some marvellous idea for these young people. I am sure their parents have it well in hand. Your name says it all.

BemusedAmerican · 20/06/2024 18:04

I disagree. I think they should be exposed to as many experiences as possible, including Trooping the Color, the balconies, etc, so that they can make educated choices. I also think they should know that they have the option to make choices.

Marvellous ideas like ' get a job'?

wordler · 20/06/2024 21:42

It’s a tough balance for Charlotte - until George has kids they’ve got to prepare her enough so that she could end up being the monarch if needed, but help her at the same time prepare for a different life where a more regular job can be achieved.

And avoid the stress to her mental health feeling like a spare part who is semi important but can be discarded as soon as George has kids like Harry felt.

SqueakyDinosaur · 20/06/2024 21:50

Hopefully Charlotte won't be quite as monumentally thick as Harry, as well as being far better parented.
