Excellent 👍

Hope they follow suit on the Duchy of Lancaster land.

The government manages the Duchy of Lancaster estate, not sure the RF get much of a say

MyGodMyThighs · 18/02/2024 12:59

I don’t really understand why this is national news? Nansledan is a well established development that already has 30pc social housing.

Increasing it from 30pc to 40pc is just to put it in line with new planning requirements.

It isn’t news.

And yet this story is everywhere. I don’t get why!

crackofdoom · 18/02/2024 13:02

Is that the one on the outskirts of Newquay? It's a nice looking estate for newbuilds, I'll give them that. Least he could do really, though.

MyGodMyThighs · 18/02/2024 14:13

Yes it is @crackofdoom, it’s far nicer than many typical developments IMO.

I guess the press have no current news to report on the Prince?

From what I understand it’s about trying to create a template for social housing which includes wraparound support with money earmarked for improving community facilities to support the extra housing plus a program of support (job help, mental health support etc) to help those using the housing as a temporary step to get back on their feet after being homeless and then able to move on from the social housing into their own homes, leaving the social housing to the next homeless person to get support.

It’s a £3 million project which will explore ways to support communities tackling the homelessness crisis in their areas - utilizing charities that are experts in the field and already working in their communities.

kitsuneghost · 18/02/2024 15:05

It's just an estate on land they own. They won't have feral kids and xl bullies running about the back garden of anywhere they frequent.

user1477255159 · 19/02/2024 00:28

The largest land owner in the whole country who works harder than doctors, teachers, the PM, builders, bin collectors etc needs some applause.

Because obviously that's what every single social housing tenant looks like, right?

HeddaGarbled · 19/02/2024 01:10

No.

It’s a collaboration with a charity supporting homeless people to provide homes, along with support services for homeless people, following the assessment of previous initiatives that indicate this may be a more successful way of supporting homeless people than hostels and other interventions.

Homeless people generally have complex needs, including mental health difficulties and/or addictions. The idea behind this project is to provide the home and the support together, not one or the other in isolation. There is some small-scale evidence that this might be more effective than anything being done before.

The extra affordable housing on the existing housing estate is a separate commitment.

It’s an interesting project and daft to disparage it just because you don’t like Prince William or the royal family or whatever your beef is. It’ll be years before we know whether it’s successful.

WallaceinAnderland · 19/02/2024 01:20

All new housing developments have social housing. They are not allowed to build without it.

caringcarer · 19/02/2024 01:52

Surely anything to provide even 1 home for the homeless is a good thing. I seem to recall Prince William sleeping rough in a cardboard box one night when he was younger so he understood a bit more. I think he's trying to do his best.

Gingerkittykat · 19/02/2024 02:55

I wonder how much profit the Nansledan estate gives to the Duchy of Cornwall each year?

I belong to our local residents association. We protest constantly about the fact that our planning department has these rules but they never enforce them. New developments are mushrooming everywhere but somehow, the social housing bit never materialises. We have so many new blocks of flats, many flats are empty, having been bought by overseas money launderers. Corruption is everywhere. We have organised car theft and money laundering restaurants and nailbars everywhere too.

porridgecake · 19/02/2024 03:11

I don,t mean WE as the RA have organised the crime! Just that we are surrounded by it and powerless to do anything about it!
Just realised how badly the last bit of my post was constructed.

wildernesssw · 19/02/2024 07:32

@porridgecake loved that last sentence 😂I have an image of the RA wearing balaclavas to meetings...!

soupfiend · 19/02/2024 07:36

I like the organised car thefts as well

Yes, new developments can get away with not providing social housing if they pay some sort of a surcharge I understood. Its still worth it to developers.

I get so cross my grammar and sentence structure goes all to pot.

The other issue where I live is that most of our high street is owned by one estate agent, known to have the planning department in his pocket. He has put the rents up so much that many of the local businesses were priced out and the only people who can afford the properties are the fake businesses. He has got away with it for decades.

WallaceinAnderland · 19/02/2024 13:09

The reason that there is a housing shortage is because developers are struggling to make a profit. If there's no profit for them, they won't build.

They have to have a percentage of social housing. This is how social housing is created.

The government does not build houses. At all.

soupfiend · 19/02/2024 18:47

Developers can pay to avoid social housing provision and they usually do, thats why there is very little social housing

Developers make huge profits, check their shares

There isnt a shortage of housing in this country, there is a shortage of affordable housing, theres a big difference
