H & M - call me Ma’am

Apparently Invictus Games officials are told H&M are to be called Sir and Ma’am!

It almost sounds like, er, royalty.

What happened to just call me Harry?

Whilst Charles and Kate are incapacitated it gives them an opportunity to creat a second temporary Royal court.

I don't tend to follow royal news , but this is odd . Like creating their own imaginary kingdom . They might want to pull back on that especially as they're not on official royal business .

MrsFinkelstein · 16/02/2024 12:49

Here's the link to the quote for those who want to see it.

It's from the DM, so take with all the salt you want, but it's a named source so seems legit.

H & M - call me Ma’am

Yes, the same named source in Express.

Didn't he just want to be known as Harry?

pilates · 16/02/2024 13:38

Yes indeed but he likes to flip flop

it doesn’t say that it was directed by them or who even asked, so it would be polite and unproblematic to establish sir ma’am and for them to respond with please call me ….. if that is what they wanted. I’m not sure if this is a cynical as it first appears.

JohnPrescottsPyjamas · 16/02/2024 14:36

We don’t want to be part of the RF, but don’t forget our children are still a prince and princess, as highlighted on our relaunched website.

I appreciate Harry will always be referred to as a prince as son of a monarch, but there is absolutely no reason - apart from elitism - to saddle their children with honorary titles.

RestingPassportFace · 16/02/2024 14:41

My students call me Ma'am (state school)
Ma'am/Sir as sign of respect (military terms)
It's no biggie.
Or are you saying I should have a Crown now?!

herewegoagainy · 16/02/2024 14:54

Ma'am is the polite address in most of the United States. I am called Ma'am in the United States and DH is called Sir. We are very ordinary.

herewegoagainy · 16/02/2024 14:56

This seems a lost in translation comment between the United States and the UK. It is similar to someone saying in the UK just call us Mr and Mrs.

Who says “call us Mr and Mrs?” Why didn’t they just say call us Harry and Meghan? I realise that in the US people say sir and ma’am, but that’s usually to people they don’t know. We even manage that in the UK. We don’t call people Mr or Mrs without their surname. I expect that the person who asked what they should call them was wondering if they should call them “Your Royal Highness” as if they were still working Royals, not “Sir and Ma’am”.

You're called ma'am and sir when you're customers or clients. You wouldn't expect to be called ma'am or sir by the CEO of a charity you supposedly work closely with.

It's hilariously pretentious and completely on script for these two.

Vespanest · 16/02/2024 15:10

I’ve been in a profession that uses ma’am, it is awkward whereas sir is much less problematic. Its worse with the pronunciation, it’s slightly more bearable with the ma’am as in arm, than the ma’am as in ham. I’d die a little inside, I’m not your mother.

herewegoagainy · 16/02/2024 15:26

It depends where in the United States you are.

In this case it was a Canadian who asked.

kingtamponthefurred · 16/02/2024 16:38

If the occasion ever arises, I'm going with 'you jerk'.

Newlywedish · 16/02/2024 16:45

I don’t mind H&M but this does sound like an attempt at demanding respect. You earn it huns.

elessar · 17/02/2024 17:20

What was that phrase of Meghan's- "we're linked, not ranked" HmmHmm

ThursdayTomorrow · 17/02/2024 17:26

Did they ask to leave royal duties and step down from the royal family? If so, why are they still using all the royal titles and kudos?

We are taking this down as it is not in the spirit of the site.

AgnesX · 17/02/2024 20:48

I loved being called ma'am by my American colleagues, but, by god, some could make it sound like like a total insult!

They should be careful what they ask for 😁

It’s high time Mumsnet showed some backbone and stopped giving a platform to relentless bullying, instead of trying to censor those people who call out the bullies.
