Would you say you're patriotic?
I definitely am. My mum raised me that way where we used to go an visit the royal horses.

No hate. No right or wrong. Just curious about how you felt about the Royal family growing up.

I was born in this country but spent my formative years elsewhere.
I don’t feel particularly British, less still English and I wouldn’t say I was patriotic at all.
Who was it who said patriotism is the last refuge of the scoundrel? Looking at some of those who bang on about their patriotism I find it hard to disagree with that.
On royalty, when Queen Victoria ascended the throne she was in debt. Now her descendants are among the very richest in the land.

Nice work if you can get it.

I'm Canadian, consider myself patriotic, but it has nothing to do with the royal family. It means I love and am proud of my country. But that doesn't mean I would blindly agree with all decisions made by government if I disagreed, in fact, I think that is what I enjoy about being a citizen here.

It's a common misconception that humanitarian aid is primarily designed to assist people in need. In reality, it can sometimes serve as a means for individuals from wealthier nations, notably the British, to gain access to what are often labeled as "impoverished" countries, with the ultimate goal of exploiting their abundant natural resources. It's disheartening that, even in today's world, some remain unaware of these dynamics.

While slavery may have been officially abolished, there are claims that a form of neo-colonialism persists. Britain continues to derive substantial financial benefits from its former colonies annually. Yet, paradoxically, many inhabitants of these nations continue to grapple with property and resource deprivation, while external interests exploit their resources. It's nothing to be proud of.

Great answer!

Another thing that fecks me off about the royal family topic is the misunderstanding of the word 'royalist' that oft appears. It doesn't mean what some posters think it means when they are scrabbling to articulate the term 'monarchist'.

And it's usually directed at people who, funnily enough, aren't living in the 17th century with strong views on parliamentarians, or who are even monarchists, so is triply pointless.

I prefer to be called a “Cavalier” 😂

upinaballoon · 19/09/2023 07:12

When you talk about humanitarian aid are you talking about the formal aid given by a government to another, or the aid given by individuals when there are appeals for the people affected by floods and earthquakes et cetera in other countries?

Fawing over royal family, disliking foreigners, voting for Brexit = nationalism

Actually doing something useful for your country (anything from entering parliament to litter picking ) = patriotism

This with knobs on.

Absolutely sums me up. I have no time for the RF, what are they ... just a dysfunctional family in a gilded cage with eye watering wealth (Charles a double billionaire obscene). They don't do anything for me, absolutely nothing.

However, I love UK, I like to give back and have done for a long time; I feel strongly about mediocre and bad governments and I really want this country to work. My adult DCs feel exactly the same as I do.. it gives me hope for the next generation, they both do a lot of voluntary work, they work hard pay their taxes, stand up for those less fortunate than them. All their friends are the same too... I must ask them if they are patriotic.

derxa · 19/09/2023 12:26

I'm Scottish first then British. It's nothing to do with the royal family. I'd rather have them than not have them.

That sums me up too.

Daisyislazy · 19/09/2023 16:10

Scottish first too , I'm not quite sure what I think about the royal family tbh

Middlelanehogger · 19/09/2023 16:16

I'm quite patriotic. Or at least I think patriotism can be a very useful value. For me it's less about arbitrarily believing that your country objectively IS the best at everything, and more about vowing to expend your OWN efforts towards improving it and strengthening it.

I vow to thee my country - this kind of thing. I dedicate my efforts to its service.

I think monarchy is a very stable form of government and I prefer it to many other models for selecting a head of state, but I don't really see that as related to the patriotism point. Except in the sense that the unelected royal can be a unifying figurehead representing the country, but I'm not very fussed about it. I'm not a royalist in the sense of following them like celebrities.

donquixotedelamancha · 19/09/2023 16:18

I'm patriotic, that's why I'd like to see the back of those parasites.

Well, yes, the UK is far, far better than its RF, which is a humongous, sponging, annachronistic embarrassment.

FatArse123 · 20/09/2023 19:21

I don't like the Royal Family, I hold the UK in higher regard than the royals, but I wouldn't say I was patriotic. I think the UK is a decent enough country, but nationalism frightens me.
