King Charles Raises Rents During Cost of Living Crisis

Charles ascended the throne at a time when millions of British residents cannot afford their living expenses. Standards of living are falling as wages fail to keep up with rising housing and food costs.

The King appeared sharply aware of this when, after his mother’s passing, royal sources began telling the media that Charles envisioned a ‘slimmed down monarchy’.

The latest Duchy of Lancaster figures show no notable signs of cost cutting in Charles private estate. Operating costs increased by 40% as the Duchy hired more staff and gave its Chief Executive a pay rise of £275,000 (lovely!).

The Duchy raised rents by 3% this last fiscal year, just below the private rental increases that have contributed to the Cost of Living crisis.

This Duchy rent hikes have contributed an extra £8.2 million for the Royal coffers.

Of course, Charles is not the typical land lord. He does not rely on rental income to pay his mortgage or household bills.

I want to copy and paste this story. This is why I think the greed is so awful.

It's by the writer A.N.Wilson. He is a sometimes newspaper columnist for London Evening Standard and writes critical biographies.

^Thirty years ago or more, I had a conversation with someone who had recently become an ambassador. There was a royal visit to the country where he was posted, and the Queen and Prince Philip stayed in his embassy for three days.
When they left, the ambassador received a bill claiming ‘expenses’. This was for a quite ludicrous amount of clothes — ten suits for the Prince, ten hats and outfits for the Queen, that sort of thing.^

Asking an old Foreign Office hand, my ambassador friend was told: ‘They do this whenever they stay in a foreign embassy. The “expenses” are paid by the Foreign Office and do not show up in any end-of-year audit as benefits that have fallen into the royal laps.’

We don't know half of it. We really don't.

Seems like the Monarchy’s slimmed down but the costs have gone up.

It hasn't slimmed down at all, he just wants to hoard the wealth among fewer people!

I think the article is a bit misleading because it’s talking about the Duchy of Lancaster which is administered by the (elected) government on behalf of the sovereign. It’s not like the Duchy of Cornwall which I think PW personally runs, or at least delegates the running of. I don’t know enough to judge whether 3% is excessive or not, but you’d need to argue it with (currently) Oliver Dowden (but hopefully not for long).

he initiated refusing the money and asking the government (who get the money) to use it for the greater good of the public.

The queen saw an opportunity to claim rights to the nation's seabeds back in the 1960's when North sea gas extraction was gathering pace.

Charles refusing money for the greater good is a PR stunt. It should never have been an issue.

And they’ll be no slimmed down monarchy - it’s all smoke and mirrors to appease the little people.

Agree. It's becoming more and more apparent that this is the case.

When they left, the ambassador received a bill claiming ‘expenses’. This was for a quite ludicrous amount of clothes — ten suits for the Prince, ten hats and outfits for the Queen, that sort of thing.

😮😮

This entitlement smacks of the historical royals who'd tour the country with their entire courts in tow expecting their conscripted hosts to meet the costs 😡

But let's face it they don't need to make more money from rent they already are significantly profitable. He should be leading from the front and frozen rents if he was true to his words about really understanding the col and its impacts on people blah blah blah

Its sheer greed.

Although not quite the same and more complicated but look at the energy companies posting profits of almost a billion pounds off the backs of people who are struggling to hear homes. There profits were more than pre covid pre energy crisis. Why couldn't 500m be enough profit whilst allowing people to not have to struggle. This is very simplistic and I acknowledge its more complicated. Its the underlying principle I am getting at.

Some of these replies make me think of Trump’s comment about him being able to shoot someone on 5th Avenue and still being popular with his voters.

Whatever Charles does there’ll be someone rushing along to defend him and his corrupt and greedy family.

He’s laughing all the way to the bank 🙄

Being able to shoot someone on 5th Avenue and still being popular with his voters

🤣🤣🤣

Wonder if Willy has raised Charles' rent on Highgrove yet?

He's already making him pay to stay in another property the generous Duchy of Cornwall bought him:

Absolute sheer greed. Especially when the Chief Executive got a £270,000 pay rise.

Yes, energy companies, the supermarkets and banks have made profits from this latest round of inflation (more appropriately greedflation). It’s really disgusting.

The added annoyance with Charles is all that media hype about how he was concerned about the CoL crisis and wanted a slim-downed Monarchy which was more ‘cost effective’ and value for money.

But it’s people on benefits, striking for better pay, buying too many lattes and Netflix subscriptions which is why people are supposedly struggling 😒
