No disrespect to her but people and the media often talk about her sense of duty, her stability and professionalism but what would would say are some of the things in her last 15-20 years on the throne that you would criticise her for?

My obvious response is how she handled the Prince Andrew situation and staying on the throne as long as she did. She should've abdicated 10 or 20 years before her death, in my opinion

Definitely agree about the Andrew situation.

BadgerB · 01/08/2023 06:52

She would have considered abdication a dereliction of duty akin to treason. It's the way the Windsors have thought since Edward 8th. I suspect that even if she'd had dementia she would not have abdicated. "Letting God and the People down"

00100001 · 01/08/2023 07:14

Abdication is extremely rare and isn't how the monarchy actually works.

FrivolousTreeDuck · 01/08/2023 07:14

I'd criticise her, like all of the Royals, for living in the lap of luxury with multiple properties while many people she 'reigned over' were homeless or struggling to feed themselves and their families.

whatchagonnado · 01/08/2023 07:17

Vast wealth and still taking a significant amount of tax payers money through the Sovereign grant. She could easily have gone self sufficient financially. Easily.

polkadotdalmation · 01/08/2023 18:32

I wish she had spent more time giving her children a secure base, wile William and kate have, but her sense of duty overrode this I think. However many career women today do the same and she was more supportive as they got older. Whatever you or I think of Andrew, he was her son and loved him. I wish she had relaxed all the nonsensical 'protocol' rules which were a hangover from the 1950s and modernised more than she did.

Overall though she was the nations granny and just always there. Still feels odd to see the football team sing 'king'.

Eyesapple · 01/08/2023 18:36

This. There is absolutely no excuse ever to send children to boarding school at 8. She was a very bad parent.

Roussette · 01/08/2023 18:47

The nation's granny?! Good grief.

🤣😂

She wasn't mine! What a thought

ElephantLove · 01/08/2023 18:49

She was t my granny. I thought she was a miserable sour faced cow and couldn’t understand all the fawning and sycophancy 🤷‍♀️

Andrew, just appalling. This is the reason I no longer support the monarchy.

Advisors will have told him not to visit New York and stay with a convicted pervert. He went, the RF should have taken action, they just trotted out more pictures of cute children and when it got hairy they were happy to throw anyone to the press to distract it.

Andrew is her legacy and the RF can't avoid that.

Agree. He was advised by his Aides to stay at the Consulate. He declined and actually chose to stay with a conviced sex offender and trafficker for days, calling it a 'convenient place to stay'. Yes rightio.... Hmm

And isn't there (phrasing it carefully here) an allegation emerging that Andrew may have been disingenuous about the extent of his continuing relationship with Epstein?

The whole Andrew business really sank my respect for HMQ into a very low place. And I lost respect for those royal relatives also who have remained quiet about him, and hung out with the ones who openly support him. Don't take the titles and the benefits if you can't live a decent, truthful life. This isn't a game of chess.

Roussette · 01/08/2023 19:16

Yes

He kept in regular contact court papers say, during Epstein's house arrest

Here...
"The court documents have been made public as part of a civil case brought by the US Virgin Islands government against JPMorgan in New York.
One section, titled Prince Andrew, Duke of York, contains snippets from a series of emails sent between the Duke, Epstein and Jes Staley, the banking giant’s then chief executive.
They suggest that the Duke was in regular contact with Epstein throughout 2010 and beyond."

I too lost respect for the Queen when she publicly supported him. Not privately. Publicly.

onlylarkin · 01/08/2023 19:24

Diana is her legacy as well IMO. Well, not her death but the entire Charles/Diana episode in the 80s and 90s.

And Fergie and Andrew.

And Harry.

I wonder how things would be different if she had built a better base for her family. Is the family dysfunction a result of her duty to country or something else? (That is a rhetorical question I do not think anyone can answer).

A bigger question is, is Charles making changes for the better of his family? Or is it business as usual?

60+ years ago it was the accepted thing and no one questioned it, but yes it was totally wrong then and is totally wrong now. In her defence parenting ideas generally and in particular royal parenting ideas, have vastly moved on. 70 years ago many many things were regarded as acceptable, so it's never wise to apply todays standards retrospectively.

Yes I completely agree and it was the norm for the Royal family and their ilk but it was definitely irreparably damaging and is part of the dysfunction dynamic that has flowed down to the next generations.

By the standards of her generation and social class, sending children to exclusive boarding schools was considered to be providing them with the best education. Some still see it that way. She and Philip would not have felt themselves to be 'bad parents' at all, and few of their peers would have disagreed.

And which of her children when to boarding school at 8? Maybe the 'bad parents' you have in mind are Charles and Diana?

CathyorClaire · 01/08/2023 21:10

I'm old and no-one I knew then or even growing up was shipped off at eight. We all walked to the school round the corner and then walked back again albeit with broken fingers like DBro who I had to escort home at ten after he'd spent an afternoon slumped over his desk in pain

Lots to get started on with HMQ but the standout for me is the repeated two fingers to the people who paid her over Andrew.

Appallingly all on repeat now by the sibs.

IcedPurple · 01/08/2023 21:15

Neither, as far as I know, were any of the queen's children.

And unless you grew up in very wealthy/upper class circles, it's unlikely you'd have known many boarders.

polkadotdalmation · 01/08/2023 21:24

Plenty of parents on high incomes today opt to send their children to boarding school in the belief it offers a superior educational experience. I don't think William and kate will unless their children want to. Plenty of non boarding private schools available. For royals it is traditional.
