Oh and FYI @Serenster the king of the Netherlands has acknowledged his country’s role in slavery and apologied publicly

Nada from the Windsors.
Well I say nothing - they had a good laugh about Harry and Meghan’s child skin colour and they have been using the N word in their documents until recently
But they are ‘ not a racist family’ - that’s the line isn’t it ?

Serenster · 23/07/2023 18:05

You do know what the “n-word” mentioned in that article is, don’t you Novella? Because, despite the best intentions of the sub-editor to mislead the reader, it’s Negro. Not the N-word that is much more commonly described by that coded formula.

The document containing the references was written in 2008. It might be helpful for readers to know before any others are misled by the headline, that the US Census Bureau still retained Negro” on its census forms until 2013. Five years after the document was written, in other words.

It must be a hell of a job for any public records trying to keep up with every single word that is from time to time is deemed to be unusable.

Novella4 · 23/07/2023 18:26

@Serenster
The document associated with the ‘royals’ was written in 2008 and only removed LAST WEEK when they were contacted by a newspaper

Novella4 · 23/07/2023 18:35

@Serenster
And as for this peaceful transition that you assert happened re the end of the British Empire - the facts do not support that assertion .
In fact the ‘peaceful transition’ line is propaganda .
Maybe you just weren’t aware of the uprisings and violent put downs in Kenya, Cyprus, Palestine , North Africa etc

Novella4 · 23/07/2023 18:37

And I do what the N word referred to in the document is, and it is also offensive

SkylarSpirit · 24/07/2023 14:08

This is a terrible idea. Will and Kate's last tour was an utter disaster and full of racist moments and just tone deaf moments. Using public money to stay in a 5* hotel and go scuba diving, they barely even did any events and when they did they made racist gaffes.

No one wants them, and no one wants to pay for them to have an expensive holiday. I'm sure the kids would have a great time but dragging the kids around as PR props looks awful.

I can remember Kenya and Cyprus. Mau-Mau and Eoka. I agree with you that they were very much un-peaceful places for a while.

Where do you mean in North Africa etc. @Novella4 ? Egypt wasn't part of the British Empire.

I did not think that Palestine was ever part of the British Empire. I do realise that there was 'trouble' in Palestine, as my father called it, and it's extremely complicated, but I don't think it had anything to do with Empire and Commonwealth. I think from 1917 to 1948 the British were in charge of it instead of the Turkish Empire, as it was what I call a Protectorate, although that might not be the correct word, but don't mix it up with the transition from Empire to Commonwealth.

Serenster · 24/07/2023 19:20

If you actually read my post, Novella, you will see I said the majority of the former Empire transitioned peacefully. I didn’t say all (and I didn’t mean all either, since I’m very well aware of the history of decolonisation). Are you comparing the scale and impact of the events in Kenya and Cyprus to the Algerian War and the First Indochina war, then? Do you think they are comparable?

Yeah, nothing from the Windsors. I've noticed so many black people constantly praise the Dutch King while bashing the British but my question is how much money did the Dutch Crown give to Congo?

The one thing that always makes me laugh about the Caribbean tour backlash is someone saying talking about colonialism in one breath (which they should) but then in the next breath are like "We wanted Harry and Meghan to come".

Just say you don't like Kate and William because so many people of colour celebrated H&M's, her becoming a black princess and had no problem with her going to several African countries representing the "racist institution". Tokenism at its finest!

The Dutch still have several Caribbean colonies as part of the Dutch state (as France also does) - they don’t even have independent self-governance as the UK Crown’s realms do.

askmeonemoretime · 26/07/2023 00:46

I am so annoyed at the way they are using their children. They know it is harder for people to protest if their children are there. Awful.

askmeonemoretime · 26/07/2023 00:49

@Serenster do you really believe it is very difficult to keep up with the fact that the n word is not acceptable in published documents? What a extraordinary point of view.

IamSTARVING · 26/07/2023 05:21

Hawkins0001 · 23/07/2023 12:45

That's understandable, but then you would be under surveillance 24/7 all phone and social media monitored, satellite tracked etc could you handle the trade off

But this is not true at all.

You never see them papped out and about. They travel by helicopter, move from estate to estate - either their own or their friends, stay in very exclusive, secluded places when they do travel.

I dunno.

Men are women, women are men, all sorts of shenanigans going on.

Cleansing the word Negro and not using it's much more offensive cousin would seem a very small ask. There are a fair few working there - surely someone would have had time?

Especially on the back of global scandal regarding the American grandchild.

Makes all those acusations seems real now.

As for holding up America as a way to behave - surely a first for Mumsnet.

@Serenster needs flowers, champagne and a green card!

Hells bells @upinaballoon .

you need to get out the history books - you are missing a crutial bit there!

IamSTARVING · 26/07/2023 05:46

@upinaballoon - please ignore my post to you.

I read your complete post, not just the first few sentences!

Apologies.

Roussette · 26/07/2023 07:02

@askmeonemoretime and @IamSTARVING are totally correct.

I just think the RF are paying lip service to this sort of thing. They are not proactive... they are reactive. Something gets spotted that really shows them up and that is when they deal with it. Not before. They feel they are above any criticism.

I think of the enormous painting hung in K&W's private apartment in KP when the Obamas visited. What on earth were they thinking? Why not remove it, instead of sticking a pot plant in front of the word 'negro'? There are 7,500 paintings in the Royal Collection yet in their private apartment they have this. Reactive... ooops we've got a problem. Proactive... don't have that painting hung there in the first place
I won't do links but it's all out there.

I remember when this came out in the media. There was so much argument on MN that there was nothing wrong with it and why shouldn't they have that painting hung in their apartment.

The Monarchy really need to update, they are set in the past.

Will we see Just Stop Oil on the runways blocking their planes when they fly off to all these countries?

Abra1t · 26/07/2023 12:04

Novella4 · 23/07/2023 14:47

Yes I agree with both your posts @calmcoco

The commonwealth was begun as an attempt to soothe the British butt hurt racists who longed for Empire

The Commonwealth has evolved into its own thing with countries joining who ( luckily for them) had no experience of being a British colony and only 14 commonwealth countries retaining links with the ‘royals’ . Those 14 are nearly all busy trying to get rid of the ‘royals’. Australia will probably be next after Caribbean islands .
Chuck will be booking his flights soon I bet with the deluded idea that ‘royals’ swanning about costing everyone a fortune , will help

That 'lucky' country Rwanda is one that joined. As is Mozambique, a former Portuguese colony that used locals as enforced labour right up until the end of the C19th.

Abra1t · 26/07/2023 12:08

Or perhaps you were thinking of 'lucky' Cameroon, where people certainly weren't treated well by their German colonisers.

O.K.

When Novella said North Africa I had thought along the north coast of Africa, but afterwards I did think he/she might have been thinking of Nigeria and Ghana.

Hopefully they will already be taken care of by the securitys services if they tried any such business against the royal family.
