The Philosophy of King Charles

Oddly, the original print title of this was something like "What Charles Gives Up On Becoming King."

The Self-Justifying Philosophy of King Charles
In books and speeches, his arguments about everything from the environment to architecture are infused with an implicit defense of his monarchical position.
By Rebecca Mead

Harverson says that Charles’s self-consciousness about being a royal drove him to become “the hardest-working man I know,” adding, “First thing in the morning, he does his exercises and has his abstemious breakfast, working on his papers over breakfast. Before he goes to bed, any time up to midnight, he’ll be doing more work—and all the points in between.”

His 'philosophy' seems to be getting us plebs to pay for him and his entire family to pay for their whole lifestyle.
I for one found it incredibly distasteful that two small and no doubt incredibly spoilt children got to sit in the best seats at Centre Court just because one of their ancestors nearly a thousand years ago set off from Normandy to invade Britain.....if William the Conqueror had done that today the far right would have sent him to Rwanda.
Anyway I digress, but the man's an idiot, and has never done a proper day's work in his life.

Gladtoblasto · 21/07/2023 20:49

He obviously doesn't move in very 'hard working' crowds if Charles is his best example.

Roussette · 21/07/2023 21:09

Good god. That article. It was long I need to read it again.

I posted today... why couldn't he make a difference? This is what I posted...
My whole thing in the lead up to the Coronation would be .. what if Charles set a new precedent and said 'I will stand the cost of the whole thing'.
He is a billionaire. If he did that, I honestly would've had so much more respect for him. What a fantastic example to pass on down to his son. And his son to do the same. It's a once-in-a-lifetime for him, after all.
I didn't want a Coronation, I didn't want massive public funds being spent on it. Nor did lots of people.
But of course he didn't do that. He has upped the game, I don't believe a word he says now. They are all greedy. Anything that comes out about cost cutting like a car that runs on cheese, or turning down the heating by a degree for the swimming pool, is just window dressing to shut us up. 45% increase on its way to him 2025

incredibly distasteful

Get a grip 🙄

Thelastofbus · 21/07/2023 21:13

Why ‘get a grip’? Many of us feel that way.

Why can't we dispute this? Should we just shut up and accept anything?

Joan51 · 22/07/2023 01:29

At £1.29 per person it’s not a big imposition. Depends on your view of the monarchy and it’s alternatives.

And how much of your post is just assumed rather than research ?

We can discuss , if the original poster had actually done factual research and analysis with books and articles to backup their points they spout.

OK so if we got rid of King Charles and instituted a republic - what would we get then ? Oh yes a president, like in the USA. Typically, presidential inaugurations cost about US$100 million ( £77 million ). More expensive than the coronation !

And then of course there is the astronomical cost of voting the president in - US 14 BILLION . All paid for by the people . Money wise I think the King is more budget-friendly !

Yes this!!!!
The royal family does nothing. Yes they might attract a few tourists and work with a few charities. But surely they cost more than you pay for them? If a person can’t get a gp appointment or get dental work done unless they earn a lot of money, how can the English people and the government pay for a bunch of inbreed idiots to live in castles?
I just don’t understand why the royal family can’t fund themselves. They can still exist, Charles can still have someone put toothpaste on his toothbrush for him, but they don’t need to take hard earned tax, and don’t need to approve any laws or whatever they like to do to justify their existence.

I would like to know why this still happens?

There's no way Charles was gonna pay for his own coronation because monarchy dictates that we the public serve him. He's spent his whole life living off the state, it's the natural order of things here, so why would he change now he's finally got his bum on the throne? In fact, we should consider ourselves privileged to have the chance to get out the bunting and bear witness to his ascension. A good host never expects the guest of honour to pay.

Though I do quite enjoy the idea of Charles as some kind of talentless-Elton John party boy, throwing himself a lavish week long period costume ball and inviting the entire nation, complete with big wigs, dancing horses and a gold carriage for the birthday boy😁

I think people mistakenly think that becoming a republic means adopting the American style of government.

Ummm... you do know that the UK GDP is in the region of £2.3trillion and the US GDP is in the region of £24trillion. Population 330M versus 67M

You cannot compare.

Love your post! Yes, it's like some sort of private party that we have to ooh and ahhh over as they ponce around in flowing robes and ridiculous hats with feathers stuck out of them.
Even Andrew was ponced up for this one, made me feel nauseous to be honest.

How would you define the meaning of "work"

LaMarschallin · 22/07/2023 10:03

I thought Charles was supposed to wear Creed's Green Irish Tweed, not Eau Sauvage.
Bit disappointing - I prefer the Creed one.
