Did anyone swear allegiance?

I'm not interested in the Coronation so didn't watch it or any of the news coverage later, but I'm wondering if anyone swore allegiance? There was such a big hoohaah about the public being invited to do so, I'm just wondering if it actually happened.

It wasn't really obvious in the ceremony that the public were invited to join in, to be honest. I didn't.

AuntieMarys · 07/05/2023 06:18

My SIL did. She isn't speaking to us because we are republicans 🤣

God no. Passive acceptance will have to do. I watched for the history, music and frocks.

This.

I just wondered if on the news they had coverage of people doing it publicly. I can't quite imagine groups of people in the street or wherever saying it.

Nope. I wasn't impressed about my mum trying to make my 3 year old do it.

Same here.

Op they toned it down for the service after the backlash. The archbishop didn’t ask people to do it, but just said they could if they wanted to have a moment of quiet reflection or say the final sentence. No one in our house did. BBC didn’t show crowd on mall, so not sure if they did.

JacobsCrackersCheeseFogg · 07/05/2023 08:00

I didn't watch it (out food shopping) but I passively acknowledge that Charles is King. Whatever.

Gentlemenplease · 07/05/2023 08:05

Lol, no. The idea itself if extremely cringeworrhy.

It wasn't really that obvious when it was, you would have to be listening intently to not miss it. They didn't show anyone outside doing it

EmmaGrundyForPM · 07/05/2023 09:06

Thanks. Interesting that they didn't show anyone doing it.

It was a mistake announcing it ahead of time with a flourish. People felt they needed to declare their position and reacted against it. If there had been no announcement and people had just been invited to take part if they wished to, I think in the emotion of the moment many would have.

The ITV commentary said the words would appear on the screen and they didn’t, prompting a backlash, so clearly some people wanted to.

AuntieDolly · 07/05/2023 09:45

I said the brownie guide pledge- did that count?

Pugdogmom · 07/05/2023 10:27

In Europe, most of the Royals swear allegiance to the people, not the other way around.

SandLResources · 07/05/2023 10:29

Erm. No.

Kaz40s · 07/05/2023 10:38

When the hubby mentioned we were asked to swear allegiance to the king this was my reaction, "stop taking the piss, as if that would happen!!??" Little did I know he was telling the truth! HELL NO! 😂

Inkanta · 07/05/2023 10:40

😄

Tlolljs · 07/05/2023 10:48

I did. At home on my own just sort of mumbled the last bit.

pussycatinfluffyslippers · 08/05/2023 08:10

I did.
But only to piss off my gobby republican neighbour. Grin

AlmaCogansFrockFan · 08/05/2023 22:04

No, I felt that was OTT, but calmly said God Save the King in Latin

PuffinsRocks · 08/05/2023 22:09

I wanted to but forgot the words and didn't have them in front of me when it came up. Oh well.

SisterMaryLoquacious · 08/05/2023 22:11

I watched it with elderly relatives: one of whom did say it, as I expected. The other was making a cup of tea and missed it.
