...WIBU not to dress them in them?

I’m not a monarchist and won’t be celebrating the coronation.

Assuming they aren't king and queen dress up costumes
I would just smile and say thanks
Your not going to change your views nor change hers

Latenightreader · 16/04/2023 14:56

I am intrigued - commemorative t-shirts? Mini robes? Non-specific party outfits?

I remember having a Charles and Diana wedding umbrella when I was very small (it was yellow with transparent stripes!). My mother is very anti-royal so I can only imagine someone bought it for me to wind her up.

YellowGreenBlue · 16/04/2023 14:57

Fancy dress? Or just smart outfits? Do the DC want to wear them?

Skyeheather · 16/04/2023 14:57

What kind of outfit?

I've bought my DC Coronation t-shirts because it's likely the school will have some kind of event in which they will be allowed to wear an alternative to uniform. Are your DC at school or in any kind of club where they could wear them?

Theimpossiblegirl · 16/04/2023 14:58

Their school might be doing something so at least you're sorted for outfits. Her intentions were good.

Blaueblumen · 16/04/2023 15:00

Her intention seems sweet?

I hope my future DIL would appreciate that if I were to buy my grandchildren clothes.

LubaLuca · 16/04/2023 15:01

I'm sure they'll be able to wear them to a school or community Coronation event.

DedicatedFollowerOfFashion84 · 16/04/2023 15:01

What are Coronation clothes? Like costumes?

Newyeardietstartstomorrow · 16/04/2023 15:02

She brought your dc outfits - What a monster!
As above, school will probably do something and ask the kids to dress up in union flag colours. A coronation is a big deal, regardless of your politics.

Pocketfullofdogtreats · 16/04/2023 15:02

Seems a bit of a shame. Kids like dressing up. Like it or not, the coronation is part of history and it's not going to be easy to ignore. But if you have a particular reason for wanting to wind up your MIL then yes, bin her present. Personally, I'd let them dress up, and take a photo for her. They'll never have to wear them again.

LubaLuca · 16/04/2023 15:02

I imagine it will be something like a t-shirt with a crown and union flag on. All the supermarkets will be selling them.

Marinapeppina · 16/04/2023 15:04

That’s so funny. I would let her take them for the day of the coronation if possible and dress them in the clothes. Take lots of pictures so you can embarrass them when they grow up. You have to have some fun as a parents and it’ll make their granny happy.

MuffinToSeeHere · 16/04/2023 15:05

Presumably it's a t-shirt with some red white and blue and a crown or something on it which she's brought so they have something to wear for the inevitable dress up day that's bound to happen at school or nursery so to be stomping your foot saying they won't wear them seems a bit daft.

Elmo230885 · 16/04/2023 15:06

Depends on the outfits/ items. If its something like commemorative t-shirts, they can be used for possible school events or for the kids to keep. Regardless of your feelings towards the monarchy, the coronation is still a historic event.

The only person a refusal to wear the items is going to bother or upset is your MIL.

Luredbyapomegranate · 16/04/2023 15:08

Comedy

If the kids want to wear them, let them, otherwise stick them in a box and into the recycling after it’s over and say no more.

pickyourown · 16/04/2023 15:08

Haha no not kings and queens. Don’t want to say exactly for obvious reasons, but along the lines of what @LubaLuca said.

Didn’t think about school dress up, mind you! They do seem to have one every other flippin week.

Yes I’m a Scrooge...
Points taken on board.

I can see the other points made and I do get that it's probably not a big deal really but I'd not be using them and would probably say something like "oh I'm not going to be doing any pro-monarchy stuff."

I guess it just depends how much it bothers you.

Blaueblumen · 16/04/2023 15:14

Ponderingwindow · 16/04/2023 15:16

If the children are happy to wear the outfits, sometimes even if you don’t love the clothes, it is worth just putting them on and snapping a picture to make grandma happy. It is a small act of kindness on your part.

Mycatisfatafatcat · 16/04/2023 15:16

Not at all unreasonable. No way would my kids be supporting the corrupt monarchy. They’re frankly embarrassing. Monarchy not the children

So if your child's school had a dress up day which they probably will and you'd been kindly given some t-shirts from their grandma which would be perfect for this day you'd deliberately not let your child wear them?

pickyourown · 16/04/2023 15:17

Just looking for the bit where I said it wasn’t a nice thing for her to do....
I gratefully accepted them.
Just recoiled inside.

pickyourown · 16/04/2023 15:21

Think it was the “oh I got these for them to wear on coronation day” and the assumption we would be celebrating it.
One DC too young to know/care what they are wearing. The other looked more perplexed than I did.

possible world book day costumes for next year? Loads of books with kings and queens in them.

I can't think why my kids would NEED to wear coronation themed clothes. If my kids school had some kind of dress up day I'd probably just get them to wear something they already had that would fit the brief.

Like OP the very idea that I would be supporting the monarchy in any way would annoy me A LOT so yeah I'd probably find a way to avoid any pro-royal propaganda being worn by my kids.
