The royal family

8 million on portraits of the King

As part 0of the Coronation the government are spending 8 million pounds on photographs of Charles to send out to institutions around the country. The idea is that organisations will display the portrait on their walls.
This is a ridiculous waste of taxpayers money. If a school or local authority want to display a photo of Charles, they can buy it themselves. Most would not though. This is totally unwanted.

In terms of government spending, £8m is a drop in the ocean. I can't get upset about this one.

PussBilledDuckyPlait · 04/04/2023 12:19

Waste of money, and a really boring portrait as well. A photo would have been just as good as that painting.

That portrait is a strange one, he looks bemused?/confused? and the hand in the jacket instead of trouser pocket looks weird. Did he choose this or was it down to the artist?

He does look a bit like a care home resident with mild dementia who has got all dressed up to go on the coach trip to the garden centre.

Theimpossiblegirl · 04/04/2023 12:23

I'd rather have some gluesticks or a ta.

Roussette · 04/04/2023 12:30

Why do posters just dismiss £8million?

I just find that odd.

What's the limit on dismissal? £50million? £20M?

Serfs are gonna serf - our National anthem mentions nothing about "the people" whereas over in France....

What does this horde of slaves
Of traitors and invented kings want?
For whom have these vile chains
These irons, been long prepared? (repeated)
Frenchmen, for us, ah! What outrage
What furious action it must arouse!
It is for us they dare plan
A return to the old slavery!

That portrait by Alastair Barford is not the picture that will be used, so everybody can stop crowing about how silly it will look. There will be an official PHOTOGRAPHIC portrait of the King to be released by the Palace in the coming weeks.

It shows how misleading the press is happy to be for a nice headline for the outraged.

No. I don't care a fig what sort of portrait it is, what it looks like, just don't want £8million of taxpayers money wasted on it.

WheelsUp · 04/04/2023 12:58

Why can't it be like when the birthday portraits of the Wales children are released and organizations use those ? I assume that there's no fee as long as the copyright is acknowledged and there's no editing of the original pic?

Yawn

AskMeMore · 04/04/2023 13:01

How many organisations actually display the portrait of the Queen at the moment?
I know they used to display it way back when the Queen was crowned, but now it is rare.
Charles still thinks he lives in the 1950s.

It's a bit culty isn't it. Like North Koreans having to have a picture of KJU in their house.

Yawn

I wouldn't mind so much if all you sycophants crowdfunded the damn thing. Put your money where your mouth is so to speak.

AskMeMore · 04/04/2023 13:28

I agree with it being crowdfunded. If you think it matters, pay for it yourselves.

OP posts:
Roussette · 04/04/2023 13:34

Totally agree! Crowdfunding the portraits plus pay-per-view for the Coronation!

I don't agree with the portrait thing at all. Btw Macron's motto is L'etat c'est moi

gogohmm · 04/04/2023 14:52

I wouldn't hold Charles responsible for this, it will be the laughing stock that is our government. By all accounts the government has pushed for a bigger coronation

Coronateachingagain · 04/04/2023 15:50

Waste of resources and badly organised!

Looks like Madame Guillotine needs an oiling then...

Puzzledandpissedoff · 04/04/2023 20:24

The only things I've seen... he opened Dumfries House one afternoon a week when the weather was cold for a free cup of tea ... he wants to chuck Andrew out of the bloated Royal Lodge, and and and... I'll come back to you on that anything else!

But was it the right type of cup of tea Roussette? Wink
Let's not forget he no longer has Fawcett to service his every need (or does he?) or that this is a person who takes his own food, drink and even furniture when visiting others, and never mind the offence this could cause to hosts

It would appear that being disappointed in the slightest way is anathema to him, and so we see the coronation plans which some fully expected ...

derxa · 04/04/2023 21:03

He ALWAYS looks like he's holding in a fart 😂

This has nothing to do with royal family or King Charles asking for this. It is standard operating procedure for the Government to update photos of the head of state, PM and cabinet ministers as they change out in various offices and departments. It will have cost the same £8m (if your number is accurate) to have sent out photos of Liz Truss that only were good for 42 days..and then another £8m to send out photos of Sunak….

Kendodd · 04/04/2023 21:10

I wonder if the government has done this deliberately, and with a big noise, to stoke up some culture war.

Why do public institutions need a picture of the head of state on the wall?
Genuine question.
