"The Royal Family: They are the OG's, the Sugarhill Gang of Racism" - Chris Rock

I got the title of this thread from Chris Rock's funny riff on the Royal family in his Netflix special. I found it a bit off for him to direct his bile at Jada, and not at Will who punched him last year at the Oscars. But his skit about Meghan and the Royal Family was really funny. He took on Meghan, the Royal Family's history of racism, in-laws, interracial marriages and colourism, but to the surprise of no-one, the jokes about the Royal Family are getting no mention in the UK tabloids.

Hope some of you will watch it on Netflix: his delivery is classic Rock, especially when he does the Sugarhill Gang rap.

*Back to the show. Everybody trying to be a victim. Like, who is this girl Meghan Markle? Seems like a nice lady – just complaining. Like, didn’t she hit the light-skinned lottery? Hit the light-skinned lottery and still going off complaining? Acting all dumb like she didn’t know nothing. Going on Oprah, ‘I didn’t know, I had no idea how racist they were.’ It’s the royal family! You didn’t Google those motherfuckers?

What the fuck is she talking about, she didn’t know? The fuck? It’s the royal family. They’re the original racists. They invented colonialism. They’re the OGs of racism. They’re the Sugarhill Gang of racism. Like, ‘a hip, hop, the hippie, the hippie to the hip hip hop-a don’t stop' of racism. The fuck is she talking about. I didn't know. That's like marrying into the Budweiser family and going, 'They drink a lot. The fuck is she talking about. These motherfuckers invested in slavery like it was Shark Tank. The fuck?

Some of that shit she went through was not racism. It was just some in-law shit. Sometimes its just some in-law shit. Because she's complaining, I'm like, 'What the fuck is she talking about? 'They're so racist, they wanted to know how brown the baby was going to be...' I'm like, 'That's not racist,' cause' even black people want to know how brown the baby gon' be. Shit. We check behind them ears.

Black girl trying to be accepted by her white in-laws. Oh, it's hard. It's so hard, it's very hard. But it ain't as hard as a white girl trying to be accepted by her black in-laws. Now, that shit is really hard. If you black, and you wanna be accepted by your white in-laws, then you need to marry a Kardashian. Because they accept everybody. Kris Jenner is like the Statue of Liberty.

Isn't the fundamental point that he is calling the royal family racist? And that she should've known they were racist. I think it reflects poorly on the royal family given it's stated as fact that they are in fact a racist institution.

He's a comedian know for being brutal to and about everyone. Will smith slapped him for making fun out of his wife's baldness. It's all for shock value, not to be taken seriously.

AliceOlive · 06/03/2023 22:06

I think Will Smith slapped him because he’s come unglued. I say this as a person that always thought Will Smith was great.

AliceOlive · 06/03/2023 22:09

I thought Meghan used the word “concerned” when recounting a conversation that she said Harry had told her about. Harry did not use that word when recounting the conversation to Oprah himself. He looked a little jarred at the idea, in fact.

I watched his tv apology to chris and it wasn't in the slightest bit sincere.

I feel sorry for Will Smith - I'd imagine it's quite stressful being married to Jada. I think she's grim, shagging her son's friend. Bleurgh

Harry came out looking stunned at the spin Meghan had put on the comment. The, if my baby is too brown he won't get a title or security. There were many conversations during my pregnancy. Er no, my amazing wife, someone made a 'comment' before we even got married.

To be fair it was a crass comment, but not an unusual one, but something I wouldn't personally bring up.

Lol. I know zero about will smiths wife!

purpledalmation · 06/03/2023 22:28

I think Harry knew it was one minor and not particularly offensive comment (crass but not intentionally hurtful) and Meghan inflated this comment made before they got married into this hideous slur. That's why he declared the RF were not racist and it was the media that called it such. No, it was your amazing wife Harry and you let this sit for 2 years, too afraid of exposing the lie.

SighsTheNewWord · 06/03/2023 22:31

To feel "concerned" that the child of a biracial (white and black) woman and a white man would turn out more black-passing (instead of the more white that he is) is quite funny.

I know genes can be funny but I really doubt there were "concerns". More like an innocent "Wouldn't that be something if this unlikely event happened?" That is if it happened anyway.

The RF may be racist but not stupid. If they didn't want a 25% black family member (who may look like he is or not), they wouldn't have accepted the marriage in the first place.

Ridemeginger · 06/03/2023 22:35

Chris Rock needs a history lesso if he genuinely believes the British royal family invented colonialism.

Many white people who feign being openminded worry about these shade. 25% black is racially offensive. You should educate yourself.

I agree, but also the world knows too - I'd feel extremely uncomfortable ... and I really don't like Will Smith either but I do feel for him!

Whenharrymetsmelly · 06/03/2023 20:49

This. He's saying they RF is a racist institution and she was dumb/ naive to not have "known"

Yes, and that's at the bottom line of/starting point of the Meghan debate.

ImAvingOops · 07/03/2023 07:18

I don't believe the RF are racist. At least, not the ones who matter. Both the Queen and Prince Charles seemed to welcome her - I remember the Queen sharing her blanket in the car and Prince Charles walking Megan down the aisle. People who are racist, don't do those kind of things. William and Kate tried to work with them.
I think H has a sense of injustice stemming from childhood (some of which is legitimate imo) and I think Megan got married thinking her life was going to be like an A list Hollywood celebrity and then discovered it wasn't exactly like that.
The press were foul, as they often are, but H & M haven't helped themselves either.

I come back to the view that if it's so bad here, and the RF are so awful, then give up all association with it (including titles) and go do your own thing.

But I also think Chris Rock was going for an easy laugh with a cheap shot, given the South Park thing a week or so earlier

Some people just say anything to deny facts that normal people easily amd comfortably talk about.

RealMcKoy · 07/03/2023 09:39

It's a Gotdamned lie to say that many BLACK people are not CONCERNED as to what shade their Black or biracial children will turn out having.......especially if they have gone "through the palaver" of "acquiring" a light skinned/ multigenerational mixed/ biracial or no Black heritage partner to have children with.

I've seen Black men and women PISSED that their girl children who they expected to come out light and without 4C hair coming out darker than expected and with the 4C hair that they themselves have. I've known Black men to walk away from their biracial children who do not look like any of the biracial ( Black/white) stereotypes. I've seen dark skinned Jamaican grandmothers of biracial and Black grandchildren who HATE their dark skinned Black daughters and grandaughters, spoil the same complexion sons who have biracial children who they also spoil.

I've also seen dark skinned Black men who go out of their way to put biracial females as the representatives of Black womanhood , but NEVER male the same "mistake" when it comes to putting light skinned or biracial men at the top of the Black male tree.
There is a reason why many Black people will NEVER refer to biracial people as Black as they can see that doing so enables the erasure of especially dark skinned Black women as representation and also enables the folly that white/Asian men and white/Asian women can have Black children.

Facts are not abuse.
Also; Chris Rock would be broke if he didn't have Black or mixed women to take the piss out of. Hear him, 'bout it takes more for a white person to be accepted into a Black family than vice versa.
It's obvious that he has a pathology about being Black, dark and quite frankly, not good looking. And it is obvious that he is one of the milluons of dark skinned Black men who HATE Black women and is obsessed with light skin and white acceptance.

I'll forever want him to tek lick and tump just for giving white people permission to separate Black people into "Black/nigg*r."

I care not about Meghan and Prince Harry. They are lifelong okay. I hate this foolishness of the ordinary person fighting for the civil rights of celebrities, that especially Black people, especially Black women have taken up hook , line and sinker as if entertainers are our conduit to emancipation. It's why wasteman like R Kelly weren't slung into the wukhouse the first time he went to court.

But I especially cannot give credence to any Black male entertainer who hates Black women. And quite frankly, my money stays in my purse when it comes to too many Gen X and younger Black male rappers, dancehall artists, comedians on both sides of the Atlantic. Most of them are just overseers in "pro Black" drag, taking advantage of the need of most Black people needing to feel good at any cost , haece the acceptance of any and any bread and circuses and the constant Black washing of non Black people instead of anything meaningful gatekeeping, standards and boundaries.

As the saying goes, 'you ain't say nothing but a word!'

People will go to any length to deny the truth right in front of them. Either that or they/'re genuinely delusional don't know any better.

purpledalmation · 07/03/2023 10:03

I don't think anyone can deny the historical situation of many black people living in countries that are primarily white, wanting their biracial children to be lighter skinned. Is this the case in African countries? I hope not. It's clearly not a good mindset with the assumption that being lighter is somehow superior. Biracial children also conform more to European ideas of beauty, again this isn't a healthy mindset. It denies different conceptions of beauty.

Chris Rocks sense of humour is harsh and, despite laughing, leaves a nasty taste in the mouth.

ImAvingOops · 07/03/2023 11:30

He does seem to have a thing about Jada. Going after the same person repeatedly starts to look like bullying. I can see why WS lost his shit if this has her. Going on for years.

I would be inclined to believe that a poc would know concern or interest in the matter before a white queen and her white courtiers.

This supposed "concern" wasn't even expressed in MM's presence, you may remember. It was relayed by someone who has admitted he has a very flexible relationship with the truth - cf his foreword to Spare where he says that his recollections were often not the same as objective facts. Well, H's relaying of these "concerns" was so unreliable that there was even confusion, during the interview, between H and M over when these supposed "concerns" were raised.

(as an aside, I used to admire Oprah but was extremely disappointed by the number of allegations and insinuations made that she left unchallenged. She really let herself down there)

So, even putting to one side MM's propensity to deliberately misinterpret and "spin" events to suit her narrative, you can't say that she as a poc would "know concern or interest in the matter" as she wasn't there when the matter was raised.

Harry - "hey darling, the family is so excited about us getting married. They even wondered aloud what shade of skin our potential babies might have, isn't that cute?"

MM - "oh no darling, not cute at all, that's racist as hell! What did you say, that they are actually concerned about how dark our babies might be? How utterly shocking and racist of them! Just wait til I tell Oprah!"

Harry - "I don't think they said they were concerned, I think they said intrigued... but let me think about it, maybe they did, oh isn't that horrible? Yes of course, you're right and you're always right, they might have said "concerned", oh yes they probably did... in which case yes, they are racist."

Purple, I hope you're right about the attitude to skin colour in Africa. I lived for more than seven years in three different African countries, and visited five others... I never got the feeling that there was a desired "shading" to have. People were beautiful, or less so, regardless of how dark or light their skin was.

Contrast that to India, on the other hand... I don't think I'm mistaken in saying that the caste system, though recently outlawed, is still alive... though hopefully dying.
